Yale GEPN 2021

Published

Hey all! I am reapplying and wanted to create this for everyone applying. I won't be as involved as I was last year, but good luck to everyone! I know they're having seminars and allowing people to schedule one on one consultations for applications.

Hi all - I see that the main essay for Yale has a max word count of 400-600 words, and the short answers are 150-300 words. Does this seem like a very low word count to anyone else? I think friends of mine who applied in the past had much longer essays. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated!!

I personally approached this by word vomiting. I know, sounds counterproductive. However, going way above the word limit at first helped me to see everything. Then from there, I was able to cut things out according to what flowed, what answered questions, what was compelling and ultimately, what was absolutely necessary to put. I wish they would provide an example from admitted students in general for these essays, especially the ones they claim are well dond that are only 400 to 500 words. Outside of that I have no real advice, I'm sorry! Oh besides having other people read it of course to get a fresh pair of eyes.

I just clarified the word count with the admissions office because it seemed awfully short as well! But that's it: 400-600 for the main essay which consists of answering several questions; 150-300 for the short answers. Also I just got an email saying that the deadline for applications was extended to November 15 -did everyone see that?

Yes, I saw the email about the deadline extension. There also was an email that went out earlier in September about the essay “If you need additional space for your essay don't add more then a few sentences.“ My essay was at 630 when I submitted and that because I had to add in observation/experience of an APRN. Hopefully it doesn’t hinder me in any way.

I didn't get either of these emails, so frustrating

I signed up to receive updates and alerts on the application process.

I did too, I'm just not sure why I didn't get the email discussing an extension. I'm checking my emails now to make sure I didn't just overlook it

The email was sent Oct. 7th 2020 if that helps.

Thank you! I just checked my trash to see if it accidentally ended up there and it was. Thank you all for bringing this up! I'm glad for these extra days to fine tune my essays if necessary. Thank you all for all the helpful info and insights you've provided! I wonder if the extension of the deadline will also extend the timeline for review of applications into later december? That would be great for people taking fall classes to possibly turn in their grades.

For the ethical dilemma essay, are you guys trying talk about an ethical dilemma specific to solving social injustices/health inequities?

The best way I found to respond to the essay was by starting with  ’better health for all people’ then I was able to better explain social injustice and inequalities.

Hopefully this helps

Hello to everyone here! I'm applying for GEPN this year and wanted to join the thread to keep up on things.  My chosen specialty is PMHNP, as it is a field I have worked in for a number of years in a non-clinical capacity. Is anyone else applying to other programs as well? I applied to UCSF last year and was waitlisted, so am reapplying this year. The Yale and UCSF program seem very similar, which is what drew me to them over others.

Having to take the GRE was a downer but I did okay, if not exceptional.  I originally took it 5 1/2 years ago, which was 6 months longer than the scores were valid. Oh well.

I wish everyone the best with their apps!
