Yale GEPN 2021

Published

Hey all! I am reapplying and wanted to create this for everyone applying. I won't be as involved as I was last year, but good luck to everyone! I know they're having seminars and allowing people to schedule one on one consultations for applications.

Congrats on the GRE! From my conversations with the admissions office, the recommendations and essays play a big role. I was also told submit any supplement information needed. You don’t want leave room for any assumptions on your application. Good luck to everyone. I submitted my application this past Friday. Nervous. Nervous. Nervous.

My app is in! Now to sit with all the fingers arms legs and toes crossed until mid/late December. ?

Kuddos and I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Best of luck to all the applicants!

Yes good luck everyone!

Hi All,

I am curious if anyone has any knowledge in desirable GRE scores as I am deciding if I want to retake (I already have permission to do so this late). I originally scored a 308... 158 V, 150 Q, and a 4.5 in writing. I took this as a diagnostic without any sort of prep, so I feel like it could maybe improve a bit, but money is tight and I’d like to avoid taking it if it isn’t super helpful. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks yall, good luck to other applicants!

Hi! I believe the score the are looking for quant is 154-156. Verbal I believe is lower zo 158 should be fine.

Hi there!

I went to check my GRE scores to answer your question:

Here they are:

Verbal    159    Percentile    83%
Quantitative    150    Percentile    38%
Analytical Writing    4.0    Percentile    59%

total 309 points.

This was my first standardized test ever (I am a foreigner and we don't have these in my home country) so I was very psyched about my verbal and writing scores. I was disappointed in the quant.

It was my first test in real-life conditions --I was a single mom of 2, prepared for 2 weeks on sections of the GRE with Kaplan, but never on a whole exam. And I had a kid with strep throat who hardly slept the night before the test, so I hardly slept either...I contemplated taking it again because I know with time and structured training I can do way better. I decided not to because I didn't have that time.

I didn't get in-- and this year with the pandemic, HSing 2 kids, grad school and a part-time job, there is just no way I can do this.

I don't know what to say...it is a lot of money indeed- especially in this economy. I would maybe email Jana about this?

Do you have any other material in your application that could provide info re: your quant. abilities? If so, maybe pointing these out could be helpful?

Good luck Cprincesa!

Hello!

So Yale is looking for you to be at/above average. Your verbal is solid but I think a 150 is a bit lower than what they want to see ideally. THAT SAID, my impression is that it's the least important part of the application.

The admissions office is very responsive to questions, so I would just email and ask. They will be honest with you. Another option is writing a short addendum explaining either why your scores were low and/or why they're not reflective of your ability to do well with the accelerated curriculum.

Good luck Cprincesa!

Would grades in science and maths qualify in that manner? For example- A- in general topic Chemistry, B in statistics, and more a->c grades in similar courses? Is that what you had in mind or is there another sort of material you were thinking?

@Cprincesa Hi! Definitely As and Bs. I got a C in biology and that combined with my low quant score is what led to me being denied the last time. I talked with the admissions director a few times and as it was already said, the addedum along with grades in math and sciences. They are particularly interested in grades for biology, anatomy and physiology and math courses. It's even better if they are recent grades but do not stress if they're not. I'm considering retaking biology to prove I am capable of getting an A in the course.

Ps. When I brought up not being able to retake the GRE, I was also told by the admissions director that the recommendations and essays are a huge focus.
