Yale GEPN 2021

Hey all! I am reapplying and wanted to create this for everyone applying. I won't be as involved as I was last year, but good luck to everyone! I know they're having seminars and allowing people to schedule one on one consultations for applications.

I have been reading all posts here and I am still curious about what qualities they are looking for in an interview. Originally, I thought interview is more like a process that ensures you are someone not so different from your written application materials. But if the interview is only 30-50 passing rate, I suppose it means interview is very critical to admission? Then the question arises...How should I behave myself in a 20-30 min interview to stand out? Would appreciate any insights!

I would “behave” exactly like you traditionally would in any academic interview. Authenticity is crucially important in any interview process. They aren’t trying to trip you up, rather get to know you. There’s tons of videos on YouTube that cover academic interviews and sample questions, but sounding too reheorificed also shows through in these processes. Just be yourself and good luck.

Thanks! That is very, incredibly helpful!

Hi,

I am currently a 1st year specialty student PMHNP track. When it comes to the interview, remember your “why?”. Why you applied to program and what you hope to gain from the program. The interview for me, was more of a conversation.

Thank you! I have been reading many comments of your in this thread and they are very helpful. :)))

A more specific question, feel free to dismiss it if it is too detailed - When it comes to "why" questions, do you recommend talking about your passion, internal motivation, and your future plans, instead of your real working experience? It made me anxious that most applicants here have amazing clinical experience that they can build upon. I am clearly motivated and have a great plan about my future, but past work/life experience is a weakness of mine.

When I say your “why?”. Why do you want to become a nurse practitioner? Depending on your specialty track, why that specific track. As long as your why is genuine everything will flow. What life experience and/or work experience help you make that choice. Remember the essay questions. Some of the questions you’re asked may come from those essay questions. The admissions office has already reviewed your application.

Your advice is very helpful, and I really appreciate it!

You’re so welcome!! Good luck!! ?

Hi former GEPN students! I am hoping someone might provide insight about the GEPN schedule for each term, such as how many days are in-person vs. virtual, whether a virtual option (for didactic courses) is available for students commuting from a significant distance, and how many days/week you have clinical in fall/Spring/Summer. In particular, I would love to know more about the experience of any students who commute from elsewhere and whether it's possible to be on campus/in the area for only 3-4 days each week, or whether everyone really needs to be in person/around campus 5+ days each week.

Thanks so much!
