Yale GEPN 2021

Published

Hey all! I am reapplying and wanted to create this for everyone applying. I won't be as involved as I was last year, but good luck to everyone! I know they're having seminars and allowing people to schedule one on one consultations for applications.

Sorry for the delayed response to everyone!! Thank you all so much for the amazing and helpful responses about the LOR. It gave me a lot of perspective and I can definitely understand that 2 of mine most likely came across pretty generic (although positive) and wouldn’t have been persuasive enough to be competitive. I am 14 years out of school. I have a dusty Biology degree and also my BSN, which I did through an accelerated program. It has been too many years out of university to use previous professors as options. I have my private pilot’s license and used my flight instructor as a reference for the academic requirement since he was also a ground school instructor and I have spent over 100 hours with him in the plane and in the classroom learning a new skill. One of my other recommenders was a charge nurse but I think she sadly lacked the writing enthusiasm to make it pop. The other one was a manager I had worked with at two different NICUs in my career and she pretty much just regurgitated my resume. I felt like I wrote them really thoughtful emails when I requested the recommendations. I took the time to explain why I was making the pivot from NICU to mental health and why I was choosing Yale’s program. However, next time I will truly connect with the people I choose to see if they’re able to provide both a strong and personal submission. That is a great suggestion to outright ask if it will be strong, not just positive. I have to admit, most of my connections with supervisors and charge nurses have been pretty brief as a traveler. And now, I have a full time telehealth job where I interact with patients via zoom and never interact with upper management. I will do some deep thinking though! I think I partially felt bad “bugging” some of the other charge nurses I’ve had over the years that have already been used as references for various work contracts but it truly is worth it now that I know it weighs so heavily. Jana did give me positive feedback on my essays, saying no points were deducted and they were “great.” I have an OK GPA (3.5 ish) and over 80 percentile in both the writing and verbal but the math was a cool 50 percentile haha. She stressed that it doesn’t mean much. I do volunteer in a group that provides support to moms experiencing perinatal mood disorders and I lead support groups with that. I could use the next few months to add more experiences in mental health. Although, I felt like they weren’t necessarily looking for more psych background/experience. If I don’t get into Vanderbilt or perhaps decide to delay school another year, I will absolutely apply to Yale again. She did make it seem like they would have more spots for BSN applicants next year with COVID not affecting clinicals as much. Is there anyone on this thread that is going to be starting the Psych/Mental Health direct MSN entry in the fall? If so, any chance you’d like to stay in touch via email with me? I’d love to hear what you think of the program as I consider possibly applying again. Thank you all so much, especially those that applied again with success. You give me hope!

3.5 ish is way more than just OK, don't downplay it! Yes your application overall sounds super impressive and I think J was honest in letting me know whether or not it was even worth it reapply. So if you don't get into Vanderbilt(but based on what you've said, I believe you have a good chance) or decide to push things off, I absolutely think you should apply again. Unfortunately, I did not apply for the direct entry specifically. Good luck, you got this!

Would any of the current students on the thread be willing to speak with me offline about the program (especially midwifery people)? I just got into Vanderbilt (yay!) and I need to decide by Monday and feeling really torn.

Secondtimer-- I was about to DM you on FB b/c I wanted to get in touch for the same reasons. Feeling the same, needing to make decisions (although with a bit more time than you). I am sending you my email here by DM.  Zooming also works.

I got in off the waitlist. After waiting almost the entire 48 hours though I decided to go with Columbia. Hope this helps someone that is still waiting!

Hi everyone -- I hope all of you are well. I am posting because I am interested in potentially applying for the next admission cycle. Would love to hear if any of you have any words of wisdom on kicking off my application?

Anything you want to know specifically?

Hi all, this is my first post here, but I am applying for the 2022 cycle for the GEPN and PNP specialty and wanted to know if you might have any advice for me.

I graduated in 2017 from a state school with a BA in history (3.83 cumulative GPA, 4.0 major GPA) and also completed all standard medical school prerequisites thinking I might apply to medical school.

After I graduated, I taught in 7th grade science in our local middle school (where I went to school years ago!) for two years. After all I saw that my students went through (I taught in rural WV) and reading The Deepest Well, I decided again to pursue the medical field but did not feel like medical school would fully prepare me to provide holistic care.

That's when I discovered Yale's GEPN program. I have several nurses in my family and have always been inspired by them but didn't think this was a possibility for me until I found Yale's program. Still, I decided that an MSW would provide me with the background in mental health and viewing social determinants of health from a macro level I will need to provide quality care for children in rural WV.

I have finished one year of the MSW program (4.0 so far!) and will finish by the Spring 2022. Since entering the program, I have taught two semesters of introductory biology lab online and am currently a research assistant for a project dealing with the healthcare needs of transgender and gender diverse people living in WV. Additionally, I just completed my internship at a substance use facility for adolescents. Next year, I will be completing it at a FQHC and SBHC.

Overall, I love what I've seen and heard about Yale's PNP specialty with its training in adolescent care and SBHCs. Also, given my research work so far, I am really interested in pursuing the Gender and Sexuality Health Justice concentration. So, any advice as I apply when the app opens in June? Are my chances okay? Any other thoughts?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Can anyone please explain their experience at Yale - MSN program?

Thanks!

I had a crappy experience within the GEPN program. I wasn't struggling academically but there are cohort-wide issues at YSN impacting the quality of the education/training. These are systemic issues that weigh on both students and instructors.

They might be in a better spot in a few years, but right now, things are quite iffy. In the end, I felt the GEPN year wasn't worth the hefty price tag and just left in time to get some of my tuition money back.

I urge you to ask very precise questions when you get a chance to meet current students.

Can anyone give any insight on how fast the waitlist moves? I am from the west coast and want to know if I could know by this week or in a few months from now. Also, would like to know if waitlisters are given opportunity to do the admitted students day. I would hate to miss the experience only to get in the next week or whatever!

Hello! Sorry to bother anyone who might still be receiving notifications from this thread - and happy holiday! I am a first-time applicant of GEPN 2023 and I have been reading almost all posts here! Thanks for being so helpful and supportive! I found many useful advice for interview!

Still, I wonder if anyone might keep the copy of the email sent by Jana that include the interview tips and question types? I don't think we receive the email for this year. If anyone could still find it, it would help a lot to my interview prep and I am very grateful! :)))

I have been reading all posts here and I am still curious about what qualities they are looking for in an interview. Originally, I thought interview is more like a process that ensures you are someone not so different from your written application materials. But if the interview is only 30-50 passing rate, I suppose it means interview is very critical to admission? Then the question arises...How should I behave myself in a 20-30 min interview to stand out? Would appreciate any insights!
