Yale GEPN 2019

Published

Like midwifery students of past years, I as well have fallen in love with Yale's GEPN Midwifery program. This question is about the personal statement.

Ive been told that this is the most important part of the application, and that it should tell your story. This was said by Dr. Korevec during the informational, so I'm fairly confident in knowing that's what they want. It should explain why Yale and why nursing. However, whenever someone proofreads my personal statement, they know I'm applying to Yale and say it reads too much like a story and not like a college application essay. It's happened like 3 times and now I'm not sure what to do. Any advice?

thanks!

Are there any current students who were accepted with "lower stats" ? I put that in quotes because obviously most, if not all people applying have pretty good GPAs but in nursing would be considered lower. I know based on my actual experience I am capable and that the essay is the most important part for Yale. However, I'm wondering how much gre and GPA play a factor?

Hi! I'm actually in the same situation where my GPA is really bad. I will be taking the GRE this weekend but I'm not sure I'll do too well. However, I do know from reading previous threads that they want to know you as a whole person, so they look at everything, including personal statements, recommendations, and work/volunteer experience. I also think I read somewhere that they count those things more than GPA/GRE, but I'm not exactly confirmed on that.

I will be applying early next month, and while it is so competitive, I'm not sure if I have a good chance mainly because of my GPA. However, make every other aspect of your application stand out!!

Glad to know there's someone out there in the same boat as me, I'm taking the GRE this weekend as well. I've been studying but the Quant is definitely going to tank me. I'm good with statistics and ok trying to at trying to apply math in real life but this? Way over my head

We really are in the same boat, because I feel the same about Quant. So far, my practice tests have been terrible. But, I'm really hoping that the other parts of my application stand out to them.

@ghazal123 same. Cheers to making our other areas stand out. Sending out positive vibes for both of us as we go to take this test!

Yes! Good luck to you for the GRE and for applying!

I was accepted with atrocious Quant scores (nowhere near their recommended score) and none of the pre-requisites. Yale wants to know who you are and how you will contribute to the world.

But, was your GPA decent? In my case, it's not, but there are valid reasons that I can explain.

@ghazal123 how did your scores turn out? I actually scored pretty well for verbal but as @ChocolateTherapy said my quant was quite atrocious. I'm doing pre reqs for other schools anyway so that's not an issue. But I'm also curious if your GPA was pretty good. Mine is not far above 3.0 which isnt bad, but bad in the eyes of some programs. However, I am glad to hear someone who was accepted had other parts of their application looked at from a holistic perspective.

The GRE didn't go too well ? At least your GPA is pretty decent tho!

Dang, I'm sorry to hear that! Idk if you have the resources to take it again but you if you do, you could try again mid October. I personally was considering it but got way too stressed the first time so I decided not to and take a chance on my current scores. Even still, I think you can still be accented without the gre scores.

Sadly I can't retake it, it's really expensive for me ? In my case, my GPA and GRE are both so bad, I shouldn't even be applying tbh. But, I know this is what I want to do and will excel in. I can also explain what happened with the GPA since I have a valid explanation, but after the GRE, my chances look real bad.
