Yale GEPN 2017

Published

Hi everyone! Now that applications are starting to open for this cycle I thought I would start a thread. Is there anyone else that is starting the Yale GEPN application? If so, are you as overwhelmed as I am? Also, if there are any current GEPN students that see this thread, feel free to share any tips or your current experiences :) Thank you!

Hi to any and all current or future GEPN students. Good luck to my fellow applicants. The nail-biting continues as we await December 15, and in that eager process, I'm hopeful to receive some guidance about some of the difficulties of the program. For instance, the challenge of dealing with blood and guts for someone like myself who is an aspiring eye-closer/"nuh uh, no, not looking, gross"-er. As an aspiring psychiatric mental health nurse-practitioner, I'd really like to nottttttt see entrails and the like. I know that is all of the first year, and I'm preparing myself. I peak through squinted eyes at reruns of Greys Anatomy like a champ now. I'm also super talented at not vomiting at the very thought of seeing births and poop and human donors. So I'm clearly ready. However, if I was to get a little insight as to how others in the program with "blood and guts" difficulties have handled the issue, I guessss it wouldn't hurt me, even though I'm as prepared as I am. Maybe some in the psychiatric tract could comment? Or others with similar difficulties.

I have a driving passion to deliver medication management, and will do what needs to be done to get there. However, some advice from those who have been there would be helpful. Cheers!

Hi All, feeling oddly calm as we wait for December 15. Maybe it's because there is a bit of mystery -- the process is unconventional -- when it comes to the method by which interviewees are chosen. I truly feel like it might go either way though I am hope, hope, hoping to get accepted; a chance to interview and to explore the campus, meet current students, professors, staff.

@joetario

I attend births as a doula and find that it's harder, sometimes, for me to watch footage of c-sections or lady partsl births or forceps deliveries than it is to see live in real time. I really think it has to do with context. Because I am learning and playing a supportive role at the birth, I find that the blood, sights, smells don't get to me at all. I recognize the humanity in the experience -- that her body is like my body and that one day I may be in her place needing someone who has knowledge about my physiology to support or help me in some way. Not sure if this helps. Hopefully a current GEPN student can chime in and offer you wisdom on this matter. I guarantee you're not the only one who is challenged by this. Good luck everyone! "Stay calm and carry on." That's my strategy. :-)

Thanks kaj123. I agree that context will play a large role in helping me overcome some of my difficulty. Channeling the desire to help has assisted me to surmount many other difficulties, so hopefully I'll be able to stay conscious upon experiencing the gore with that in mind. I'll try to stay calm and carry on, and maybe invest in some smelling salts if that fails.

Here's what I want to know: what does the daily/weekly schedule look like for GEPN students? I'm trying to get a sense of what to expect.

Hi keishadoc!

Some advice I received going into GEPN was to remain open to scheduling changes/last minute announcements/additions. I was worried about the schedule before GEPN started, but I've actually found it to be manageable. We don't know our schedule weeks in advance. Simulations/observations/clinical rotations we get as we progress through the program. Right now, we either have two, 6-hour clinical days or one, 12-hour clinical. We get rotated after six weeks. Our clinical days this semester are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. If we have a Saturday 12 hr clinical, then we have Tuesday and Wednesday off (which I enjoy!). And then classes are on Monday, Thursday, and Friday in 2 hour lecture blocks. Sometimes there will be simulations or observations or lectures that will pop up outside of the ordinary schedule and we just roll with it. GEPN was best described to me as being a full time job. I am definitely very busy-it is my whole life right now, but it's also do-able if you manage your time right :-)

Thanks keishadoc for asking the question and GEPN2016 for answering! That was a relief to hear. I'm fairly used to a heavy schedule, but part of me was worried that I have no idea what I'm in for. I, of course, expect content to be difficult, but I'm glad the actual time commitments are manageable.

Now just to (im)patiently await decisions... :whistling:

Thanks, @GEPN2016

Your response is helpful. Do you happen to know how many CNM/WHNP pre-specialty GEPNs were accepted last year? And, do you mind sharing what you were doing before you were admitted to Yale? Were you an undergrad preparing to graduate? Had you been in the workforce for a few years? What work/experience made you want to apply for this program and at Yale Univ.?

Thank you for taking the time to write on this forum. I know we all appreciate your feedback!

GEPN2016, your response was extremely helpful.

Now to wait...

Hi 2017 applicants! I thought I was keeping any eye out for a thread here but I somehow missed this until today; sorry I'm coming in a bit late in the process. I'm a current GEPN (destined for the adult acute care track) and while GEPN2016 has it pretty well covered here I'm open to Q's and aid in any anxiety relief I can provide!

I know it's nearly absolutely impossible to relax right now but try to enjoy whatever free time/family time you have right now! Once (not "if" :sneaky:) you're here it is kind of a whirlwind of learning and you'll wish you had taken some time to just relax and be present where you are. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

Hi, itsacalling521! I'm a current GEPN and those were my top 3 choices as well! Are you from the PNW (asking because of SU)?

Hi Everyone!
