Yale GEPN 2017

Published

Hi everyone! Now that applications are starting to open for this cycle I thought I would start a thread. Is there anyone else that is starting the Yale GEPN application? If so, are you as overwhelmed as I am? Also, if there are any current GEPN students that see this thread, feel free to share any tips or your current experiences :) Thank you!

Hello :-)

My major was American Indian Studies (so no science background whatsoever)! That being said, I don't think I felt any less prepared for the program than people who did come from a science background! :-) GEPN really does give you everything you need to know, though it feels like a LOT sometimes. I came into the program ready to learn and understanding that my schedule was about to get crazy. I feel like that's as prepared as you can be!

My speciality will be WHNP/CNM when we begin first year speciality training, but right now we are all just "GEPN"s together. It's actually really nice not to have speciality distinctions during GEPN year, because it gives you the chance to meet and become friends with people you wouldn't have otherwise. It also gives you unique learning experiences (both in clinical and class) that would be outside of your usual speciality realm. GEPN year really does feel like an RN bootcamp sometimes, but everyday I have a moment where I'm thankful to be a part of this! I'm glad to answer any other questions you may :-)

My GPA from undergrad was a 3.3. And I can't remember my exact GRE scores, but I recall that I did well in the reading and writing portions and NOT so well with the math. In all honesty, I don't think the scores/GPA factored that much into whether or not people were accepted.

They want to see that you are a well rounded person. They care about your travels, your volunteering, your work, your passions, what your life has been so far. There are people in this program who have had incredibly unique and diverse life experiences all outside of the realm of healthcare. GEPN is not competitive once you are in it. We all want each other to succeed, passing with honors does not give you an edge over someone who is just "Passes". That's part of what brought me to this program.

Thanks for all the insight! I've talked to several people who have completed/are currently in the GEPN program, and they all say the same thing--that test scores and GPA aren't as critical as experiences, characteristics, values, etc. That's certainly encouraging! The type of people admitted to the GEPN program are so wonderful/exactly the type of people I imagine myself surrounded by. My fingers are so tightly crossed.

Out of curiosity, when did you hear about interviews?

Thanks for all the info!

I think interview decisions were released on December 15th and then interviews were late January/Early February!

That's not so bad--only a month and a half of nail biting :)

Does the school give a lot of funding or scholarships? Do they give preference to locals?

There is no "in state" "out of state" tuition for the program, it's the same for everyone. There are a few merit scholarships (you are notified if you get one with your acceptance letter) and there are need based scholarships, based on your FAFSA. I wouldn't say the school gives a lot of funding. The vast majority of students take out loans (including myself). However, it's WAY better than some comparable programs for tuition rates. You are also taking out loans for a program that will give you a secure, well paying job. So I thought it was all do-able.

Thanks so much for ALL of this info! It's really reassuring. My GPA is good but it's certainly not the strongest part of my application. I'm excited and so anxious to move forward and start hearing more about it! I loved the program when I went to an info session and it felt so right for me. Can't wait to visit again!

Thank you for sharing all of this information, GEPN2016. It's helpful. I've read a lot of the entries from 2015 and 2016 and it was fun to read through everyone's journey together and see how friendships seemed to be forming already. I wish everyone the best. I feel good about my application -- that I did the best I could do and that my essay told the whole truth (in 2 pages!) about why I want to be a CNM/WHNP and why I want to study at Yale. We'll see what happens. Hoping for an interview so I can dazzle them, sweep them off their feet. :-)

Has anyone looked into Nurse Corps for scholarship opportunities? Where you serve in a high-need health care center for 2-3 years and get a stipend, tuition paid for, etc. I think it's $30,000/yr. I'm wondering if people know about this and have experience with it at all. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the input GEPN2016! I appreciate it, since we're all probably looking through old threads trying to find out what competitive GRE/GPA/experience is. I poured my heart out and soul into my essay about why NP/acute care/Yale. Hopefully that stands out the most. I graduate this December with a Kinesiology degree and GPA of 3.7. My GRE scores weren't the best, in the 60-67th percentile. I have worked in the ER as a medical scribe for the past 3.5 years, following and writing notes for NPs, PAs, MDs, and DOs. Also have study abroad and research experience and have been involved with a women's leadership program for some time. I know this program has a lot to do with experience OUTSIDE of healthcare, so I almost worry that I'm not diverse enough in that aspect. I will be anxiously waiting until Dec. 15th! Good luck everyone! :)

Is anyone else DYING inside?!? I feel like the waiting is REALLY getting to me!

YES! I am so anxious to find out!
