It's probably too soon to start this thread- anyone else out there?

Anyone else worried about New Haven? This is the only real issue for me. I hear it's a pretty crappy area outside of the university, and I will be moving with my spouse who needs to find a decent job, etc. If it weren't for the location, Yale would be my #1 choice given the prestige and how great of a program it is, but right now I am leaning more towards Boston schools.
Be aware that YSN is no longer in New Haven, but on "West Campus" which is in Orange, CT, 15-20 minutes west of New Haven. It's more suburbia there, and not crappy in the sense that New Haven is.

Hi everyone! I just applied for the Fall 2014 cohort. I applied to the FNP specialty. I'm anxiously waiting for some news hopefully in the next month or two about interviews. Is it just me, or is this thread especially quiet this year? Anyhow, I hope I get to meet all of you at some point in the near future. Best of luck to you and have a fun and safe Halloween! :)

Seems like a quiet thread!! DentHyg, how have your other apps been going? So far I've just turned in SMU, U Penn and UCSF. Still working on Yale and Johns Hopkins..deciding to forgo Columbia.. Where else are you applying?
Hi n.a.norcal! My apps went well! I decided to only apply to UCSF and Yale. I feel really confident in what I submitted to both schools so hopefully things will work out. I know I'll end up where I'm supposed to though, whether I get in or not. Life has its way of working things out, so I'm trying to stay positive. How are yours coming along?
Personal statements are the death of me...I know that I want to get into nursing undoubtably, but without having ever shadowed an NP it's hard to answer those questions about why specifically advanced practice nursing!! My volunteer experiences and academic record look great on paper, but I feel if I'm missing that big "why," my intentions can be picked apart by the readers...
hmm, yes I understand your concern with these questions. Perhaps begin with why you chose Nursing to begin with, then describe what attracts you to Advanced Practice specifically, based on your knowledge of the profession. There must be a reason why you're here at this point in your life. So dissect that and work with that in mind. Without shadowing, it may be difficult to pin point key elements that draw you to it. But if you speak from the heart, your genuine desires and interests about "why" will shine through. All you can do is work with what you do have and emphasize on what you really do know. It might help to have several friends or coworkers read your statement to get an idea on how it reads to others. I hope that helps hun. Good luck with it and I'll send good energy your way :)
great advice @denthygturningnp !
