DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 20) - Doctors located an organ donor early Thursday for a 17-year-old girl clinging to life after she received a heart and lungs that didn't match her blood type, a spokeswoman said.

Jesica Santillan was to undergo organ transplant surgery Thursday morning at Duke University Hospital.

The procedure has a 50-50 success rate, said Renee McCormick, a spokeswoman for a charity that is helping pay the girl's medical bills.

McCormick called the new organs an ''incredibly good match.''

''We are elated,'' she told CNN. ''The family is overjoyed.''

The organ was found at 1 a.m. Thursday.

McCormick said she didn't know who donated the organs, but they were donated directly to Jesica, who mistakenly received organs incompatible with her type O-positive blood during a transplant Feb. 7 at Duke University Hospital.

Her condition steadily deteriorated after the botched operation, and she suffered a heart attack Feb. 10 and a seizure on Sunday. A machine has kept her heart and lungs going. A scan Wednesday found no signs of brain damage, McCormick said.

Jesica's body was rejecting the new organs because of the different blood types. Antibodies in her blood attacked the organs as foreign objects.

The lead surgeon said Wednesday he believed appropriate checks were made before the organs were offered to the girl.

''I am heartbroken about what happened to Jesica. My focus has been on providing her with the heart and lungs she needs so she could lead a normal life,'' Dr. James Jaggers said in a statement.

Jaggers said he told the girl's parents immediately after the operation that an error had occurred, but the statement didn't indicate when he realized it happened.

The organs were flown from Boston to Durham and included paperwork correctly listing the donor's type-A blood, said Sean Fitzpatrick of the New England Organ Bank of Newton, Mass., which sent the first set of heart and lungs.

Two Duke surgeons who had patients with type-A positive blood declined the organs but a third doctor requested them for Jesica, according to Carolina Donor Services, an organ procurement organization. The organization did not identify the doctor.

Duke hospital officials had no comment Wednesday on why doctors sought the type-A organs for Jesica.

Jesica, who is from a small town near Guadalajara, Mexico, needed the transplant because a heart deformity kept her lungs from getting oxygen into her blood. Doctors said she would have died within six months without a transplant.

Exactly my point.

Right now I don't trust him one bit. My guess is he'll sue the hospitals and staff, collect millions, and no doubt keep a portion for himself. Jerk.

i am curious about his having worked on Dole's campaign...(hers, not his)....he reeks of some sort of twisted political aspirations....all his grandstanding dogoodiness.....

I heard on the local news that her parents have Mahoney the power-of-attorney because of the language issue (sounds like he was the primary translator between her family and the hospital - which raises some ethical issues, I think) and because they were grateful to him for his efforts to try and save her.

Doesn't sound like a very good reason to give POA, but I suppose her family may have been just shell-shocked and felt they were unable to deal or function in this situation.

Serious ethical issues BIG TIME. I never allowed a family member or other "family rep" to translate to my Hispanic patients for this very reason.

I feel sorry for the family because on top of losing their daughter, I have a gut feeling that Mahoney is using them for his own personal gain.

I feel the same way about Mahoney. Maybe I am wrong, but it just seems unusual for a friend of the family (and not a life long friend either, just in recent years) to be SO involved, and to have a POA. I fear that he has ulterior motives. He just gives me the creeps for some reason.

Sally, thanks for the link you provided.

She died. Very sad. My heart goes out to the family.

BUT, I have a real problem with a few things here..

First of all, I, like other's here, have watched numerous AMERICAN children die while awaiting organ transplant. Children of the AMERICAN WORKING CLASS. Dang straight I have a problem with us giving organs to immigrants (legal OR illegal) while our own children die.

Whether she was legal or illegal at the time of the operation is mute to me. She was ILLEGALLY smuggled into MY country and in my opinion, stole the life from two other Americans. May have been the child I cared for today. The child of hard working Americans. The child whose parent's have mediocre healthcare coverage. Their crime? Being born American and playing by the rules.

The next BIG problem I have with this whole thing is that the parents had the gall to refuse to donate organs. Their "state of mind" is of no excuse at this moment. These people have known the odds for this child for years now. These people KNOW the importance of organ donation. Their child was given, not one, but TWO sets of organs and they have the undecency to refuse organ donation??!!! THAT in itself tells me about all I need to know about them. Selfish.

And with that said..I also have a right to be selfish. I want to see MY country take care of its own citizens before they take on the world.

As for those who are in favor of this family obtaining a large settlement..

when OUR healthcare premiums rise beyond our paying capability..

remember, your bleeding heart supported one of the lawsuits that was instrumental in driving the cost of healthcare from the point of affordable to the point of unobtainable. The money to "compensate" this family WILL eventually be passed onto the taxpayer..one way or another.

Just proof once again..

If we'd have sent her and her family back as soon as we found they were illegal, everyone would be better off. She'd still be alive (right???), we wouldn't be facing a major lawsuit and two more AMERICANS on the transplant list would probably have their organs by now.

Wow.

First she is an alien not an immigrant. Immigrants obey the law coming here. I have no problem with them getting or giving organs.

She also is NOT a minor in many states. So yes she did/does have the right to choose to come here or not.

The system is screwed up and everyone "caring" about an unlawful sweet little girl not getting the right organs and then getting worst is sad and wrong for the system. She should have been sent back to Mexico when they found out she was an alien!

This is very scary. I hope you never have to struggle to provide health care for your children based on where they are from.

I have to step in here. So far, what I've read in this thread has been good, heated debate, with no personal attacks (save for that last post, which I've edited.)

The other thread, started after Jessica's death has been removed temporarily, as the discussion had turned nasty, with posters attacking each other. Please don't let the same thing happen to this thread.

You have a RIGHT to express your opinion. Others have the RIGHT to disagree with you, but not to attack you personally for your opinion, however wrong they feel it may be.

I am leaving this thread open, but warning you to KEEP THE DISCUSSION CIVIL!

Thank you Jay-Jay. Excellent moderating. :)

MishlB, no one has a problem with a legal alien or an immigrant having help with food stamps etc. No one stated that. It is the ILLEGAL immigrant aspect that seems to bother so many people. There is no WOW about it.

My comments are referring to the callousness I have seen, but I will refrain from saying anymore for I have been edited. I guess I am not allowed to express my opinions anymore.
