WSSU ABSN 2021 Start

Published

Hello all,

Let's start this 2020 application cycle thread. Anyone will be applying this Summer?

Hey everyone! I applied for 2021 too, so glad I did some googling and found this forum!!

I honestly knew NOTHING about this application process before submitting my application. Yall...the embarrassment I feel reading through this! I just got an acceptance letter a few days ago and I thought it was for the ABSN and I called all my closest people, put it on my Instagram...OMG LOL

Now that I'm reading, pretty sure that was just from the university and not the program. Uuuugh. Well...hopefully I will really get in and I won't have to endure the further embarrassment of explaining why I'm not going to nursing school!!

I wanted to ask...is anyone else finishing up pre-reqs this semester? I have a couple and I feel like if anything holds me back from acceptance it will be that. I have good grades otherwise.  I'm an older student (almost 36) so my SATs and 1st bachelor's is far in my past, but I did alright in those.

Now that I know I didn't actually get accepted yet, I feel knots in my stomach all over again!!

@emf1010 we didn’t have interviews at all for me group. we just got an email oct 25th last year from ----------------------- that said “you are accepted to the ABSN, let me know if you accept before Nov 1st”. Then once we accepted with her we got a bunch of attachments with more details about 2 weeks later.

@rmukelabai with our group you could apply to the university after you were accepted to the ABSN. But for the N19s and groups before us some people would wait til the last minute to apply, then the university would have a delayed response and I think it caused a headache for the ABSN admins so they changed it to N20s and beyond must be accepted to the university first before applying to ABSN to avoid that paperwork headache. Don’t accept to the university until you know if you got into ABSN. Accepting the university offer takes like a 48hours. It’s super easy.

@Lcc84 on the WSSU website it says “Individuals interested in the ABSN option must complete all nursing pre-requisites prior to applying to the option”. If you have several missing prereqs IDK how/if they will accept you. I hope so but that was why I didn’t apply earlier because of that statement on their website. Also all classes should be less than 7 years. I posted screenshots. So if you took the class 10 years ago they may count it but if you haven’t taken it at all it will look like you are missing prereqs. Fingers crossed.

@Ashlee Clark I'm finishing two, all my other prereqs are current as well. I got conflicting advice when I emailed the program about it. One person said no, you can't apply. The other said yes, you just have to finish with grades above Cs and maintain your GPA. It was confusing so I figured there was no harm in applying and seeing what happens.

I was reading another thread last night from this program where someone said they had a couple people in their cohort who were still completing classes. But...we shall see!!

Ah got ya! Do you mind giving me an idea of what your GPA was like as well as test scores?

@rmukelabai sure! My first BA GPA wasn't too impressive, it was 2.93. But my prereqs I've gotten all As and Bs, so my GPA is 3.4-ish for those. My SAT was under the old scoring system since I graduated high school in 2002. I got a 1350 out of 1600.

So what happens if you accept the university admission prior to getting into the ABSN program? Because I definitely did that the other day when I mistakenly thought it was an ABSN acceptance letter (*sobbing*)

@rmukelabai my Bachelors from WSSU in 2012 was a 2.9 & my Masters from Wake in 2014 was a 3.0 . When I redid my prereqs at Forsyth Tech in 2016-17 my GPA was 3.7 . I also had 3 years experience teaching Chemistry (I feel like I put that on a resume or something with my application). My SAT scores were 760 math, 540 verbal, 1300 total. I think they looked at my current work/GPA mostly and the fact I had a complete application. Some people successfully admitted into the N19 group applied previous years and were denied due to incomplete apps (didn’t submit SATs, didn’t apply to the university). However, they successfully completed apps and were admitted this year.

I was told before applying they calculate your GPA with prereqs less than 7 years. So even though I got a “C” in Micro in 2010, I got an “A” in 2016 and they use the A to calculate my ABSN application GPA bc the 2010 grade was too old.

@Lcc84 I don’t think anything happens. Just don’t pay them any money until you know you are in ABSN. They might send you random reminders about registration or paying tuition, etc. just ignore it because our programs registration looks wayyy different than traditional students.

@Ashlee Clark okay thank you!! And thanks for all your responses in general, very very helpful.

@rmukelabai ignore me, I thought you were asking me about my scores, whoops LOL

@Ashlee Clark I wanted to add...you are BRILLIANT woman!! Those degrees and experience, it's no wonder you got in!

I wrote a letter to add to my application describing my relevant experience. I've been a birth doula and Lamaze childbirth educator for 6 years. Part of that time I volunteered my services with the Greensboro YWCA teen moms program. I also worked at Forsyth Dept of Public Health as a pregnancy and parenting educator where I got certified as a lactation educator as well. I was able to do a couple rounds on the mother & baby unit at Novant as part of that.

All of that to say, I hope my experience will strengthen my application too. Keeping everything crossed they'll be okay with my finishing those last two prereqs this semester.

Oh geez. I thought the same thing, my Rams portal says my major is accelerated nursing and that I was accepted. But reading all of this I guess that doesn’t mean anything!

This process is so anxiety inducing, it’s all I can think about!! I had an application that I left out the SAT score but I was able to email someone in the nursing department and get it put with my application. I've heard some different things about some things being unorganized so I’m hoping it was received! I’ve wanted to be a nurse since I was 15, I’ve been a CNA and worked on mother/baby unit and in a nursing home. I had a little struggle with Chemistry when I first went to college so I decided to change my major. I just hope we all get it! So many nerves, I hope we know soon ???

I thought the same thing when I saw my Rams portal ? I am still mortified how extra I got announcing that for nothing LOL

I've wanted to be a nurse since I was 4 years old, but always doubted myself. So I can relate! I hope we both make it ?
