Writing an essay for the BON

Published

So, I basically have a misdemeanor for theft that happened 7 years ago when I just turned 18 and a dumb PI charge a couple years later. Even though I do have a couple minor misdemeneaors on my record, it in no way is indictive of my current character. I was dumb and naive, what can I say. Anyways, It is time to submit my license/nclex application to the BON. I have all the paperwork from the case, arrest, probation, etc... and now I need to write a self explanation revolving around those events. What should I include and focus on in this explanation? To anyone that has gone through this, any advice would be a GREAT help! Thanks a bunch.

Focus on the ways that you have been "rehabilitated"--any volunteer work, ways that you have personally grown, new skills that you developed, improved health habits and lifestyle, all things that demonstrate your desire to better yourself. Have you sought counseling, utilized support groups, helped other people in your situation. Outline what happened, but focus on the positive things that you have done, be humble, show how you have learned from your experience. Writing an essay that rehashes court documents and is filled with excuses or is defensive is not impressive. But humility and appeal to your good character will go much further.
