wound care surgical asepsis or clean technique?

Hello everyone I am currently working on my first year of nursing school at chamberlain college of nursing...

I have a question for all of you wonderful nurses and nursing students or professor out there! I have a test...TOMORROW over wound care. I'm so confused... do you use surgical asepsis or medical asepsis for wound care? I know that specifically for evisceration you should most definitely use sterile technique..

So, in my head right now I have it that you should use surgical aspesis for cleaning wounds however, non-sterile gloves are acceptable for the process of cleaning the wound?

For your exam go with whatever your instructor said!

There was a pretty decent study done in 2007 showing there was not a significant difference in infection rate with sterile vs clean technique.

This is exactly how we were taught on both written exams and during skills tests. We used clean gloves to remove an old dressing and evaluate the wound. After that we used sterile technique to clean the wound and redress it.

I can say that I have not seen this done in the real world, as not all facilities request it and I did a wound dressing using clean technique while working in clinical last year. That being said, ALWAYS answer test questions based on your books and the teaching of your instructors. Nursing school and the NCLEX are based on a utopian nursing society where every step is done exactly as the book says, all supplies are at the ready and all help is on hand. It's hard to separate those two things but it is necessary. Good luck!

I am currently a nursing student. My instructor has taught us to use clean gloves for removing old dressing from wounds then to create a sterile field and use surgical asepsis to clean and dress the wound (which would include sterile gloves). I realize that my response is late but I just discovered this forum and decided to offer my input to help in any way I can. I hope you got it figured out in time for your test.
