Would You Prefer a Male Nurse?

Published

hey guys. since most of us here are nursing students, i was just curious...would you guys prefer a male nurse over a female nurse in general? i know it doesn't matter as long as they did their job compentently...but if given the choice, what would you choose? i personally don't mind for most things, but i sure was glad to have a male nurse when i had to have a mole on my scrotum checked  so for me it just depends on the situation i suppose. thoughts?

I have never been in the hospital for anything, but I don't really care.

I had a male nurse appear during my first childs delivery, I have to admit it took me by surprise but once I realized that he was just as professional as the other females, I totally went with it. He held my leg and was really nice. My mom and hubby had the other one. I was in the navy at the time and now I realize that quality has a lot more to do with it than gender. Male or Female, just know what you are doing, be good at it and be NICE! My :twocents:

I work as a tech, and a couple of times younger male patients have requested that I come in and help clean them instead of their female nurse. Never had a female patient refuse assistance because I have a Y chromosome.

For the most part I don't care what the gender of my nurse, doctor or any other healthcare professional is but I will say, as a male, if I was having a catheter inserted or something like that I would prefer a male nurse. I haven't had to be hospitalized for any length of time, just some pretty far out ER visits (swallowing a retainer and an allergic reaction) so I haven't had experience this situation yet *knock on wood*. I also don't have any children yet but I would ask my child if they want a certain doctor or nurse doing a procedure. I realize that for some things no kid will ever want them to happen but if my son or daughter is more comfortable with a certain doctor or nurse (no matter what the gender is) then that will be who does the procedure.

It is my hope that I will be able to have male nurses and P.C.'s and techs. if the need arises....but hospitals near me have a hard time getting and keeping enough nurses period...let alone finding male nurses who seem to be very scarce.

I don't care as long as they don't kill me.

I wouldn't care either way as long as they get the job done.

I'm a male and I perfer male doctors and nurses. It seems that I have a complex with thinking that a female nures or doctor gives a motherly impact on the situation. And when I think of my mother I think of someone over reacting on the situation. Male healthcare professionals always have a more laidback approach to the situation which always makes me feel more comfortable.

where i'm from (california) - when you write "hey guys" you are talking to everyone... so i'm going to provide my input.... though i see guys responded to you, mostly. same thing goes for "coke" - when i want a drink of soda of any type, i'd ask for a "coke" and the person would ask what kind.... just how i grew up.

so the answer to that question depends on what the male nurse needs to do. and what they look like..

:chuckle just kidding. i don't care, as long as it's not too embarassing.... if it's for a gyn thing, i'd prefer a female... otherwise i wouldn't care.

I'm also a male. And if I were to be a patient, I would be choosing males to nurse me. I just want to observe if they got gentle hands in performing those procedures.

 Wanting to observe if they have gentle hands in performing procedures??? ummm..... weird response. Sorry.

maybe some female nurses have a motherly reaction to you. I leave my mothering at home with my kids, where it belongs. I don't have the time or the inclination to mother or spew advice or opinions to anyone. Keeping all of that out makes for a rather easy dialogue and nurse-patient relationship - get in, get out, get 'er done (as those North Carolinians would say) I'm sure there are many out there who feel as I do about that. :twocents:

Most people think I'm a teenager thats probably why they play the mothering role to me. But what is so crazy I even had a male doctor play the religious card to me.:D
