Would being a psych Nurse deter fy

I was told by one of the Nursing teachers that if a graduate nurse (RN), starts Psych Nursing as her / his first position, the RN would never be hired any where else.

I assume she meant that because of lack of nursing skill experience, e.g. respitory, or wound care skills etc...

Is this True?

Does any have info they can share ?

I'am 3 weeks from graduation and need to make a decision soon regarding a nursing position.

That's rediculous. But having said that, it is in your best interest to work on a m/s floor first because psych patients can/will be physically ill as well. You need to know how to take care of them. Also, if you want gain respect from your coworkers who have been psych nurses for 20 yrs, your ability to start an IV is invaluable--they'll love you for it :) .

I think going to a medical or some type of medical floor or ICU first is your best bet. Like above poster, you need to get time management and prioritization skills down first. Good luck.
