RN to Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree possible ?
I initially started going to college to earn a degree to be a practicing psychologist. . My choice to become a psychiatric nurse was based on my life's changing circumstances at the time. I've been a Psychiatric RN for 2 years. I've looked into other options in the field of nursing in order to find an area in nursing I'd be able to engage more psychological skills and the closes I've come to finding a comparable area to satisfy my desire is a psychiatric NP. I'm not inclined towards the medical aspects of an NP, particularly the medication treatment, which is a skill an NP must understand well and implement carefully. Perhaps I should have pursued my inclination towards psychology regardless of my life's circumstances, but I needed financial security, and a degree in nursing would provide financial security in a shorter period of time than earning a degree as a psychologist. I forfeited my dreams and desire for security. I choose "psychiatric" nursing as a way to satisfy my love of psychology. I still feel my calling was in psychology working one on one with patients. I'm very good at it. In psychiatric nursing my ability is not appreciated by other nurses or so it seems. They tend to the more technical aspects of the nursing field. They seem not to have a love for the concept the application of active listening and all the good stuff engaging with a patient / counseling offers a patient who desires to get well has. I feel I've made a decision to go into nursing but the real me the person I should have been is not allowed to come alive fully. I've always dreamed of working as a psychologist and now I wonder, is it to late for me to pursue my dream ? . My question is what is the likelihood of successfully going from a Psychiatric RN to earn a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D) degree starting in my midlife, 48 years old? I have a diploma in nursing and associates in science. Any info would be appreciated. Terri

A BSN to MSN bridge program, or RN to BSN, than BSN to MSN ?
Hi To Everyone, I'd like the opinion / in put from other nurses relating to a choice I need to soon make. I'm presently working as a psychiatric RN, and want to specialize in psychiatric nursing , psychiatric CNP or PNP perhaps. I'm wondering which route would be the quickest and most cost efficient program. A BSN to MSN bridge program, or RN to BSN, than BSN to MSN ? Terri

Can I apply to a Nurse Practitioner program with an R.N and only a B.S?
Hi Siri, I'm still not sure if I understand how I can earn the opportunity to sit for the NP exam. I have only a RN degree. Can I enter a bridge program BSN - MSN than after completing my MSN can I tack the exam for NP, or do I need an additional 2 years of education in a nurse practioner program ? Also, my main objective is to be a Psychiatric nurse practioner. Would I need to be certified to add the specialized portion of Psychiatric, to my title of NP ? How long approximately would it take going from RN to BSN -MSN (bridge program for MSN / assuming I can become an NP in this way ) to a Psychiatric NP? Thank You Siri :)

Can I apply to a Nurse Practitioner program with an R.N and only a B.S?
Hi I'm interested in understanding what course work is involved in earning a licences as Psychiatric Nurse Practioner. I'm 45 years RN working as a Psychiatric nurse. I'd like to further my education in a course of study that is most efficient and minumal in time, yet lead me to the position as a Psychiatric Nurse Practioner. Can a BSN - MSN bridge program offer me the appropriate knowledge and opportunity to sit for the NP test? And is my understanding correct, in that, in order to become a NP I need to earn MSN ? I'm hearing and reading 2 lines of thought on becoming an NP. The first is, I need an MSN and after I earned an MSN than I enter a 2 year Nurse Practioner program. The second line of thought is that, I can earn the opportunity to sit for the Nurse Practioner exam after completing an MSN program. Any guidance / information regarding the course of Psychiatric Nurse practioner would be appriciated.......................... Terri :)

Safe Heparin Levels ............:icon_ques
Thank you for responding to my question regarding Heparin, Janfrn, Would you explain specifically, what 1.5 to 2.5 represents numerically ? I'm trying to make my question clear and I'm having some difficulty. Please bare with me. I think what I need to undersytand is, what are the specific range of numbers that 1.5 to 2.5 represents. I'm confused when they say the PTT is 35, so its ok to administer Heparin, or its not ok to administer anything over 100. That is the best example I can think to give in order to explain what I'm trying to ask. Thank You for your help :Holly2:

New graduate nurse fired for not having experience after 30 days .....
I'm looking for advice. A nurse who recently passed her state boards was hired as a charge nurse. Within 30 days she was fired. The job description required experience, and yet the facilitity who knew she had recently graduated and had no experience, still hired her. She can not think of any other reason they fired her after her 30 day evaluation period, except that on one occasion she did not check the the peg tube patency before administering medication, ( she had been being observed by the evaluation nurse. She had done the procedure properly prior to this particular occasion when she forgot to check for peg tube patency. She called the nurse who evaluated her and the nurse evaluator said that she had no idea she had been fired. Further information given to the new nurse was that she was fired because she did not have enough experience. Why hire her knowing she had no experience without giving her adequate time to learn. 30 days is not alot of time. Now she needs a job. How should she approach applications? Does she put down she was fired after 30 days ? I feel bad for her. I think that the facility hired her until they could get an experienced nurse for the position. This facility is known for going through RN's quick ( they Quit). She was in charge of LPN's who cared for for alzhimers / dementia patients. Any feeedback would be appriciated............. Terri
