Would the hospital frown if I do this?

I am wanting to work in L&D and I dont know if I can just be a LPN or go for the RN so I was wondering if I called my local hospital and talked to someone and told them I was a nursing student and wanted to know if I had to go for my Rn to work on their L&D floor? do you think the hospital would frown on that or do you think they would give me the information I need?

Probably the best way to put it would be "I was wondering your minimum requirements for acquiring a job in L&D? if they don't get what you mean then - do you require RN or LPN?

I would suggest that you call the nurse manager of L&D and/or mother-baby and request an informational interview. This is an opportunity to speak to the manager strictly on an informational basis, not as part of a job interview. Express your interest in L&D and inquire as to what education would best qualify you for a position there. I have not worked in any hospitals that employed LPNs in L&D, but know of many that utilize LPNs on mother-baby, which would be excellent experience for a future L&D RN. Also ask about elective courses in nursing school that would best prepare you for a role on L&D, volunteer opportunities, etc.

This is a good way to make yourself "known" to a potential future employer, especially if you present yourself in a very professional manner (well-dressed, questions prepared in advance).

From what I hear, most L &D's aren't hiring LPN;s. I'm a new L&D nurse and was told that they don't hire LPN"s b/c if they need someone who is able to interpret and respond appropriately to fetal monitors.

If that is a state thing, or a my hospital thing, I don't know.

I'm a LPN and I work in L&D. The LPN's where Iwork can do Nursery or Post Partum.

Jolie's suggestion is a good one. If you're still shy about calling, you might be able to find out on the hospital's website. You may see some job openings for LPN's there. Of course not seeing those openings doesn't mean that they never hire LPN's.
