worried!!!

Hi,

I'm new here. I am not in nursing school yet, but I want to become a nurse, and will start taking pre-reqs next semester. The thing is needles kind of make me nervous. Also, the thought of giving someone an IV makes me nervous:imbar Do you think after I actually start working with needles and IV's my nervousness will go away? Sorry, this might sound really stupid. I'm just worried that people will think I'm not cut out for nursing if I'm not totally comfortable with using needles at first. What do you all think?????

Relax. You'll have much more important things to worry about if you start nursing school.

WHAT! you're slightly nervous?? Unacceptable!!!!!!!!!

JUST KIDDING.

Your nervousness shows that sticking meedles in other people is not an every day thing in your life right now, and that you want to do a good job. Both good points as far as I'm concerned.

If you want to be a nurse- go for it!!! :-)

I'm still nervous when I have to start IV's, so it's perfectly ok. The more you do, the better it gets. Don't let that stop you. You can overcome any obstacle with a little practice.

I am just coming back after 8 years out...a friend needed an a subQ (tiny needle, not deep) injection in her belly for fertility issues. I hesitated even after all the experience I had before. It's OK! You just take a deep breath.....and do it. You'll be fine. We all get the ::willies:: sometimes. ;)

you get used to it really fast

Don't worry about the needles you'll get used to them.

My first subq injection went itno my finger and then into the patient!! :uhoh21: Both of us lived!! :chuckle

I have been a nurse for more than 20 years and needles still scare me at times. Especially after I have not given injections for a while. It gets easier the more you do! You can overcome anything you put your mind to. Go for what you want and the rest will work itself out. Good luck to you! :)

hey, you hate needles? I hate them too, receiving them!!! I am the worst patient. At work, I developed an unexpected anaphylaxis to shrimp, airway closed, barely made it to the ER, airway closing, unadulterated panic....

Whaaaat? an IV? Took at least three people to hold me down... the benadryl, steroids and epi... well anyway they kept me in my place.

Long story to say.. I despise needles.. I am the IV QUEEN hear me roar!

It's taken along time to adjust... hey it's nursing.. you think needles are bad, wait till you experience..

-explosive diarrhea

-GI bleeds

-wrapping a dead body

-trying to talk a patient into showering... 7 plus without

-sputum, suctioning

-dressings where your arm up to your elbow is MIA

by the end of your first year.. an IV is the least of your worries.

All that minor, what else in life can you do that makes an impact on the life of a stranger, you are better for it each day.. and you get paid..

No one was born a nurse. Yes you get over it. I nearly fainted when I was in nursing school and had to do emergency wound care when my husband cut a big ol' nasty gash in his leg that needed stiches.
