I just started nursing school and I'm working toward an ADN. I have been hearing a lot about new grads not being able to find work because of the recession. I try to keep telling myself that the recession will end and someone will hire me somewhere but it is really discouraging to hear this. Part of the reason I wanted to get into nursing was because I want to travel and people told me I'd be able to "get a job anywhere." It is upsetting to hear that that is not true.
I know I'm doing the right thing because I want to help people. Its not a matter of me questioning the path I've chosen. I'm just wondering how uncertain my future will be once I am an RN. And I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on things I can do while I'm in school to better my chances of being hired once I graduate.
Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

Concentrate on school while you are in school. The future will take care of itself. Since you say you want to travel, that should suit your goal to find a job when you graduate, since many have to relocate to work.

My advice is to get a job as a nurse extern or CNA if you can. The only people I know from my class who have gotten jobs worked at the hospital as a CNA. Even those aren't finding it easy. Good luck with your studies.

I ditto about worrying about school right now. Things can change quickly even in 6 months time. Even though things are tight in my area, most graduates found a job.

I think that you should worry about school as well, and have faith that you will find a job, think positive.
