Working two jobs for new grad?

Published

Hi everyone!

I just have a question to ask. I just recently went on an interview for a subacute rehab/LTC and got the position for part time 11pm-7am (2 shifts a week), it was only position available so I gladly took it. I should hopefully be starting orientation very soon. Anyways, I also applied to many other facilities. I just wanted to know beforehand if I possibly run into an ordeal, what do you do if you already started training at one facility but get a call back from somewhere else that you applied? Is it a smart idea for a new grad to take on 2 different jobs right away or does it not matter and just depends if the jobs can work around the two schedules?

I am also really scared for working at the subacute because night shift gets a bigger patient ratio but majority of patients are sleeping so I am very overwhelmed already and havent even started yet. Any advice??

Good morning! :) I moved your post from the post-grad forum (that is for MSN/DNP/etc.) to the First Year After Nursing Licensure forum to encourage responses.

To answer your question, whether or not you can handle it depends on the jobs offered, and on you. I would probably discourage a new grad from doing anything beyond one full-time job during your first year as a nurse because I think it might be a bit overwhelming while you are gaining your footing as a competent nurse. If you are offered another position that you would prefer, remember that you have to advocate for yourself and your career.

Good luck!!

Also keep in mind the maxim, "One day at a time". Since you have the two days/week now, I would hold off on any new applications until you are established and see how this situation pans out. Who knows, they may like your work ethic and bump you up to a full time position. Just take it easy and concentrate on learning all you can until you get another opportunity, then take it from there. Congratulations on two shifts a week! Many nurses in your shoes still have no work whatsoever, so you are very successful!

I agree with caliotter3, see how this job pans out first before putting in more apps. Though I honestly think having 2 jobs as a new grad is very doable. Since this position you have is part time, if you were to receive another offer (or are actively applying to other places), look for a PRN position. As a PRN you can set whatever availability you want and most will give you a differential. I got two job offers at the same time out of nursing school, one temporary research nurse position and a PRN position. I was able to work full time hours between both jobs, especially since the facility in which I was PRN was always in need of staff. :)

If you need the money that a full time RN job brings, continue applying to full-time positions. when they ask you "why are you planning to leave this job" say that it is only part time and you need something full time. That is a valid reason.
