working school hours only?

I know Queensland employs school nurses. Generally a Level 2 position Mon-Fri. I think they are in high demand so the chance of scoring one might be a bit low, unless you want to live in a remote community.

Day surgery units are another option.

These positions are next to impossible to find in acute care in my neck of the woods. I work two evenings a week, and will be doing 2, 4 hour meal reliefs (9-1300) next year when the little one starts kindy, with the exception of school holidays.

It is possible and it NEVER hurts to try. Apply to your nearest hospital and ask. I knew a lass that when her husband left her ended up working 9-6 on a surgical unit. Sometimes hospitals will employ you during that time to cover the busy period of the day.

Hi,

I am the Director of Nursing of a day surgery unit owned by an opthalmic surgeon. We only operate m-f, and our surgeons never work during the school holidays.

While we do operate later than school hours, it is never past 6pm and our staff find their child care needs can be accomodated by before and after school care provided at their childrens school.

It may take you some networking to find such a day surgery in your area.

Well - I thought I would update you on my quest for school hours! I have written, visited, applied, searched, and despaired! To no avail...I have found nothing that will fit in.

So I am a housewife! Also will be looking at a change in career that is more flexible or going back to the UK. Probably the latter.

awwwhhh!!! Don't go back there...

I work in a doctors clinic hours are 9.30 to 1300 or right through to 1800. Depends if I feel generous or not....for the Docs.

Pay is not as good as the hospital system, but I have learnt more than I thought.

Lot more people skills after all they are not at my mercy stuck in bed :chuckle

I have a good idea of IM injections in the deltoid that in the gluteal. :coollook:

give me a question about immunizations I'm your gal.

Assessment skills now honed in and I am hoping this will give me more skills for when I travel remote around Australia.

Try...don't go back to the Mother country :imbar

It is difficult when nothing seems to be out there.

But networking is the key, and persistance does pay off.

The other thing I can think of is working as a clinical educator to undergraduate nursing students. You would need to contact the school of nursing of your nearest university's/TAFE's to find out more.

Royal Perth Hospital offer family friendly hours on some of the wards. My friend works them, so I speak from experience but am not sure about school holidays.

Hi!
Are there any australian nurses out there who have been lucky enough to get a position which involves working school hours, and getting the school holidays off?
Having just moved over here I don't want to sacrifice my weekends and also have no one to look after kids in school hols.
This style of work hours was just creeping in in the UK.....do you think I'll have a chance of this over here. Or are the trained nurse ratios such that it isn't feasable?
Would be very interested in all comments and experiences that others have had in the juggling game of kids and carreers!!!

I am presently working 08:30 AM - 5pm M-F in a day clinic.

I have a few friends that work 6hr shifts m-f and don't work school hols - unfortuanately they are called casuals and being available doesn't always mean that they get work. I work for Central Coast Health and the support roster system here seems flexible in terms of allowing staff to select their own roster - but the concept of all school hols off is not somethings that has happened yet - there are just too many nurses with the same type of requirements. Doing 12 hr shifts 3 days a week and organising child care is almost easier for soe of them. I know a couple whoo do permanent nights so that the child care they have is just sleep over care - not ideal but it allows them to work and still have days with the family.
