I had forgotten all about this until now....we have returned to the UK!!! Many reasons, not all to do with my work but boy are we happy back home! Just a twinge of regret that it didn't work out but we tried! I am now back in the NHS working a great school hour, term time only contract, and it was easy to find! I love my work here and am so pleased to be back. Thank you for all your replies.x

This makes me so cross. I have worked with so many trained nurses that are so pre-occupied with their "important" tasks, they fail to notice the most basic human needs in their patients. Thank god for caring HCA's who notice the food, warmth and communication needs in patients on wards where some trained nurses are so up themselves that they think anything other than obs and paperwork is below them. I worked in aged care, stroke and rehab and prided myself on being a nurse who recognised patients basic needs as well as the "important" high tech stuff. All nurses should be encouraged to regulary take a long hard look at what they are doing and make sure they are caring for the holistic needs of their patients. Health care assistants should be encouraged to report trained staff for ignoring basic patient care. I hope your Mum gets the care she deserves and feels better soon. Scoobs x

Well - I thought I would update you on my quest for school hours! I have written, visited, applied, searched, and despaired! To no avail...I have found nothing that will fit in. So I am a housewife! Also will be looking at a change in career that is more flexible or going back to the UK. Probably the latter. There you go! From one sad and homesick scoobydoo x

Hi! Are there any australian nurses out there who have been lucky enough to get a position which involves working school hours, and getting the school holidays off? Having just moved over here I don't want to sacrifice my weekends and also have no one to look after kids in school hols. This style of work hours was just creeping in in the UK.....do you think I'll have a chance of this over here. Or are the trained nurse ratios such that it isn't feasable? Would be very interested in all comments and experiences that others have had in the juggling game of kids and carreers!!!

I am a UK nurse who has just emigrated to Australia. I worked in the UK with some of the most fantastic filipino nurses who where specifically sought by the hospital to solve the nursing shortage there. BUT I do feel that incentives to entice nurses back into the profession would have been a better long term solution. The ward I worked on gave me school hours to keep me when my child started school...fantastic...but I was only one of a couple of nurses in the hospital who was lucky enough to get that. Now I'm in oz. And having difficulty getting work to fit in with family life! I have years of experience and am a hard worker....looks like Australia has encouraged me over for my skills but will lose out as I'll end up working in the local supermarket! I reckon family friendly hours and flexibility for all is more inportant than wages.

I have recently moved permanently to australia and am about to start looking for work In the UK I was a member of the Royal college of nursing.....which organisation should I join here and what will it cover me for/ services it will provide?? Thank you for your replies. I'm all registered with the Victorian nursing board etc. I think what I was really worried about was that british nurses may not be seen as "technical" as ozzie nurses - will I need to do courses when I get there on cannulation, venepuncture etc? In my area of work these skills wern't required so it was impossible to get the funding to be allowed to do the training!! Anyway I'm off to stock up on sunblock and umbrellas seeing as we are going to Melbourne!!

Hi!! Im a british nurse who is emigrating to Oz very soon:) Im interested to fing out how UK nurses and the skills they have are percieved by Australian nurses. Ive worked in stroke rehab for a few years so my skills arn't "dynamic" but I love what I do. Am so excited...any usefull tips and things are very welcome! Ta..scoobyxxx
