working in san diago as BSN

Published

hi, I am a Registered nurse in Perth Australia, and thinking of moving to San Diago. I have done my BSC nursing in Australia and I am permanent resident here, not Australian Citizen yet. moving to SAN DIAGO, for nursing , if it going to be really challenging to clear NCLEX and find a job. I work as a practice nurse with GP,will I be able to get a job in medical centre there?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Yes it is going to be challenging both as meeting RN requirements as well as find employer willing to go either H1b or immigrant route

I have done my BSC RN nursing and Diploma of enrolled nurse in Australia , worked as EN(LVN) for 2 years and RN for 1 year . My experience is I'm in aged care facility and worked in medical centre GP practice for 3 years. I am not sure whether I should move to San Diego or not, my sister lives there, and she keeps asking me to move to US , she is Australian citizen but loves residing in US.

How are you planning on moving?

I am planning to move by applying work visa.

H1b will be difficult especially CA as they currently have high nurse unemployment. Also most employers will not look at you unless you have met state requirements and passed NCLEX. CA requires US SSN with application which you can't get until in the US with valid work/immigrant visa. So will have to meet another state's requirements and then hope you met CA requirements later (they do their own assessment)

Make sure your transcripts show Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics, Adult and that clinical and theory was done at the same time as CA very strict on this

You mention in another thread that your partner is wanting you to move to the US. Are they a USC? Marriage may be the easier option to live and work in the US. Otherwise expect a long and frustrating process

Yes, we are thinking of getting married. But I am not sure how will I work there and get a job. Actually this reason has put our relationship on risk.

He has got very good job, working as engineer but he is also on H1 Visa, how will I work there after getting married with him.

If he is on H1b then no you cannot work on H4

Is there any way, I can come and work there as Nurse,

i have got no other experience else then medical centre.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Unlikely. You do not have work rights. Without a valid social security number you are ineligible to even apply for a nursing license in California. There are extremely few jobs for inexperienced nurses in CA as the unemployment rate for nurses is around 45%.
