Working and Nursing School

What types of job's did you hold while in Nursing School? If so how did you make it work? Hours, etc.... Thanks

Specializes in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

I started off working 2, 8-hour graveyard shifts (11:30pm to 8am) Friday and Saturday night as a lift technician for rehab services. We eventually switched to 12-hours and I ended up working one 12 hour shift a week on Saturday night. How did I make it work? My hospital made it work really. They were really flexible with my school schedule and really positive about me being in nursing and did not bug me one bit about working only one day a week (I'm per diem). Yeah, I didn't have too much of a social life outside nursing school, but this job allowed me to keep my foot in the door and I got to study and do HW too and because of this, I was able to study plenty for school and get actual experience during work seeing many things.

Fortunately, my program is set up for working professionals who are earning a BSN. I work 40 hrs/wk. Mon-Fri.

Our classes are weekday nights ( a few are online ) and our clinicals are on the weekend.

I've worked at a logistics company the past 7 years. But currently looking to get a tech job at a hospital.

my wife and I normally work day shifts, but for her nursing school and my paramedic school we did night shift, for my upcoming nursing program I'm going to remain on dayshift, two 12's a week

I was a Waiter, Bartender, and Line cook. I worked the 1530-2330 shift friday the 0600-1200 and the 1530-2330 on Sat and the 0600-1200 on sun. As well as every other 1530-2330 tue. I used to clock out and sleep in the closet at work on Sat between *****.

My parents could not support me through school because my brother received all their support after graduation to become a missionary. Believe me, you can do anything for a few years to get by if you have to.

typo I meant shifts

Specializes in 15 years in ICU, 22 years in PACU.

I worked evening shifts(3-11) every other weekend at the University Hospital where I was going to school. The ICU nurses were very student friendly and let us draw CPK levels from art lines and other little boring (to them)tasks. And I was the elected runner to go get the concretes from Ted Drewes. (Super thick shakes for those not familiar with a St. Louis icon!)

Also got my first new grad job offer from that very Hospital.
