I recently started on a new unit. There is SO much gossiping! Not just among the nurses, everyone who works on the floor. Techs, secretaries, social workers, you name it. They all talk about each other! Even the assistant manager takes part in it. Lots of these gossipers are "friends" who hang out together outside of work. They will be best friends one day and then the next day talking about each other to everyone else! I'm sure I have been a hot gossip topic being the "new nurse on the unit." I know when a bunch of women are together it is unlikely that no gossiping will take place but I have worked on two other units and they were nothing like this! It really makes me uncomfortable and mad. A few days ago I was talking to one of the nurses and she was saying how she hated all of the gossip on the unit but when the next shift came in she starting talking mean about another nurse right after she walked out of the break room! :angryfire Bottom line is, I am there to do my job and not to be best friends with everyone. However, I do want to fit in and be liked by the others but I don't want to be involved in the gossip! It's hard to be included in conversations when they are all about bashing co-workers! It really makes me miss the last unit I worked on. Everyone there was super nice and other than a couple of night-shift nurses who were always at each other's throats not a mean word was ever said behind anyone's back.
Has anyone worked on a unit like this before and how did you handle it?
Nobody’s Friend
My name is Gossip.
I have no respect for justice.
I maim without killing.
I break hearts and ruin lives.
I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age.
The more I am quoted the more I am believed.
My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name and no face.
To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become.
I am nobody’s friend.
Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never the same.
I topple governments and wreck marriages.
I ruin careers and cause sleepless nights, heartaches and indigestion. I make innocent people cry in their pillows.
Even my name hisses. I am called Gossip.
I make headlines and headaches.
Before you repeat a story, ask yourself:
Is it true?
Is it harmless?
Is it necessary?
If it isn’t, don’t repeat it.

I'm working in LTC, there are 4 nurses on my shift and yes, the gossip has been a problem. Not to the degree you are describing, but there are a few who are really, really bad.
Because our facility is shaped like a "T", I can take my med cart and park it at the end of my hall and avoid the nurses station as much as possible on those days. Not only do I get to spend more time with my residents, but I avoid the gossip.
It's nice to be oblivious to all of it--seriously.

a bunch of years ago i belonged to an online group that had become great friends. we had pictures of ourselves and families posted. it was not a private community. i had a cna that hated me. somehow she found those pictures. i have a tatoo on my chest. it was visible in a picture. she went back to work and told everyone i had Media pictures on the internet. it went around the building like wildfire! i even had patients ask me if i did Media on the internet. i always told the patients no but when some of the staff would be gossipy and ask me i would say "omg did someone find those pictures on that 'nurse loving animals' site??" i had so much fun with that rumor! i should have been ashamed of myself for the fun i had with it. but i wasnt, lol
eventually i left this cna a message on that site that said "i know you read here and you are an idiot" lol
i swear to God...that girls daddy came to work trying to get me fired! they called me in the office over it. she had told her daddy i'd threatened her on the internet and all kinds of stuff, not to mention how she told him i did Media with animals! of course, nothing came of it and the girl was gone but the rumors never stopped. new people would be hired and they would be told about me and what i did when i wasnt working, lol.
i met my husband there. haha we still laff at some of the stories he was told before we started dating. he told me that after hearing the rumors he HAD to date me. lol
hahahaaa good times good times. they probably still think i have sex with animals, lol
