Working as a CNA in a hospital at 17

Published

I took a CNA class at my high school and I passed the test. Now I am wondering if I could start off at a hospital. Both the hospitals in my area are hiring. One is hiring full/part time in ortho/neuro floor. The other one is hiring emergency room-part time/full time and the heart/lung surgery floor. I'm 17 and haven't had a job before. Could I even get a job as a CNA with no previous work experience?

You likely will not be hired without experience. Hospitals are more selective, than say, a long term care facility. As for the age factor, I would give the hospital (or other employer) HR department a call and ask. I was hired for my first CNA job when I was sixteen, but that was at a long term care facility, a long, long time ago. BTW, a good way to gain personal references and an "in" at a hospital is to join the volunteer group. That would give you an advantage on a job opportunity.

Hi!

I was hired at a hospital as a CNA without any experience! I found out that some floors are willing to hire CNA's with no experience so it's worth a shot! Make sure you have a well put together resume and if you know anybody that works at the hospital ask them if you can use them as a reference. Good luck!!!

I am not sure if this rule applies for your state, but in North Carolina we are not allowed to work as a CNA until the age of 18.

Depending on where you live, honestly. Not many hospitals hire CNA's with no experience. They usually require 2 years of experience to begin working as a PCT in a hospital. Try working at an LTC before working in a hospital!

I worked as a CNA when I was 18, although in LTC/assisted living. I eventually worked as a CNA in a hospital but they wanted experience. Some of the CNAs I used to work with on med-surg were hired without previous experience, so it definitely depends on the hospital, their staffing needs, and if they have the time and resources to train you.

I know a girl who got a job in a hospital at 17, but she had CNA experience in a nursing home.

Most States require you to be 18 to work as a CNA for obvious safety and health hazard issues.
