Hello!
I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am a trained nurse for 5 years, I'm working in the area of surgical unit and infection control. Anyone know the institutions that hire immigrants?

There aren't enough jobs right now for Americans. We can't continue to hire foreigners. You should stay in Brazil. Too many Americans need jobs right now.
I did not know that there are so many unemployed nurses in the United States

Funny I was just going through hospital listings, and those of some agencies, and there still seems to be a huge shortage of nurses in the US. Perhaps it depends on the specialty. Dont lose hope marcosnetrj, you will find a lot of valuable information on this site....I Know I did.
I tell you I used to get offended when I started travelling and would hear comments about foreigners, but now I realise it's part of the experience, it cant all be good and not everyone is accomodative or helpful. Every country has someone whinging about foreigners, but if you really wanna migrate....why not, life is too short.

There is a big difference between employers posting job openings and people actually getting hired into those jobs. I don't really understand the rationale, but it appears that many employers maintain lots of job postings but have no intention of hiring people into those positions. I know that my "healthcare system" employer has so many RN openings listed at all times on its website that, if those were all really vacant positions at the hospital, they wouldn't be able to keep the hospital open -- but the hospital is running just fine (albeit, (intentionally) short-staffed); the number of open positions listed on the website never seems to decrease; and new grads in the area can't find jobs.

The majority of the areas in the US aren't hiring RNs at the time. There's no need to import when RNs are losing their jobs left and right. Most hospitals aren't willing to spend the money to train domestic new grads, and they wont spend the costly amount to import because it would be just as expensive. You may want to look at another country. Boa sorte!
Chantelle, Funny that you must not live here and certainly don't know any facts about being a Registered Nurse in the United States. I don't know where you are from and I trully don't care. We are NOT short of Nursing positions here in the USA. Nobody is hiring right now b/c our economy is suffering terribly. There are thousands of Nurses currently seeking work and they can't find it. Why should American hospitals hire FOREIGNERS when they can hire AMERICANS first. I don't know why the word Foreigner bothers you so much. People who aren't from here are FOREIGN. Look it up. If you are sick of people "whining" and you are sick of the people you meet in your travels, then do us all a favor and STAY HOME!
Oh boy, so much anger out there...but its good to ventilate.
SouthernAsh, chill out, Im not 'sick' of people 'whining' nor am I bothered by the word FOREIGNER,...I chuckle now when I encounter hostility towards "FOREIGNERS". Im just another nurse who loves travel and new experiences, dont know nothing about the US but look forward to knowing more when I get there. Experience has taught me to not take a lot of things personaly. I guese it also has to do with all these years working in mental health.
However, as professional nurses...ambassadors of our profession, its shameful to paint a picture of hostility to one another ON A PUBLIC FORUM.
To those nurses that are still out there trying to get a job or trying to get registered in the US, dont lose hope. I just had some good news today, may be too soon to celebrate but hey its a start. There is some hospitals out in California that are taking applications even without your licence yet, they state that the only thing is you cant commence until the licence comes through (obviously!). Remember you gotta market yourself, your skills and your experiences, it dont matter what nationality you are because patient care comes first. When managers walk into an interview they looking to see who will do the job best..not the person's nationality, from my experience as a manager, sometimes it is a lot more unsafe to have an incompetent nurse on the floor than to work short but with competent nurses who get the job done.
Even out here in Australia there is new grads failing to get positions in the new grad programme but there is also areas where migrants are getting hired (some Americans too)....you cant exactly run a ward with new grads, you gotta maintain skill mix. But hey, if you are a new grad failing to get work at the moment dont lose hope, I would suggest looking at ways to upskill yourself (dont stop study coz you have completed your nursing course) and you will eventually land the right job.
REMEMBER, BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER!!!!

I hardly find the word "foreigner" offensive so much as your vile attitude.
This is the "international" nursing forum. Why don't you go elsewhere since your opinion on international nurses is crystal clear.
Signed - A "Foreigner" working in the US.
PS: I guarantee you couldn't do my job.
LMAO, ghillbert

Wow honey, you ARE classy aren't you. The epitome of a Nurse.
And calling me vile. I was stating facts and now you resort to name calling. Shameful. We usually don't use those tendancies in the United States. Maybe they do in your foreign country. lol.
