Work Hours

Hiya

I'm just wondering if the RCN or NMC has any definitive statements on the amount of hours one must have off between shifts? Do they take travel time into account for example shift ends at 11pm takes 50 min to get home then expected to be back on shift at 730 am next morning?

The RCN or NMC I don't think do but the European working time directive does, although it looks at working hours rather than travel time unless that travel is work related rather than commuting.

EWTD = 11 hours between shifts

Then surely finishing at 9.30pm and being expected to be back on shift at 7am the next morning is illegal under EWTD? interesting...

Yes it is. hence the (one of ) the reasons why some trusts would prefer everyone to do 0700 -2000 long days (12 or 12.5 paid) and 1930-0730 (11 or 11.25 paid) nights ... the other main reason being that you cover 6 'sessions' on longdays rather than 5 and overlaps ... and why shift times are often tried to be aligned with that when e-rostering is implemented.

the principal other reason cash savings in payroll (alleged with respect to USH on lates, actual with 5 vs 6 'sessions' ) as well ....

E rostering was a PITA when I had a permanent job. Not so bad now I am bank and don't have to use it.

We have eRoster, it's not too bad and you can put in 'must-have' requests eg your birthday.

I'm hoping once it goes "live" the issues would have been ironed out. At the moment, it's a mess! One person got 10 days in a row, someone else is getting 60 hours one week and 10 the next, and so on. Hopefully it will end up working out for us.

My co-workers are who use it not happy with it so far!

One of two causes for that kind of behaviour from the system

1. rules not properly set up when the E rostering was first commissioned

2. lazy checking by the Ward Manager after pressing 'populate roster'
