do any of you work in anything other than ltc as an LPN?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I am excited about starting nursing school (LPN) but I have NO DESIRE at all to work in a nursing home. I want to either work in ER, L&D, or a OB/GYN practice. Am I going to be stuck in ltc? I'm in the state if virginia.

That's great that North Carolina has so many LPN jobs!!! Maybe I will end up in NC someday. I know I cannot work in LTC ever again. I'd rather work as a prostitute than work in LTC. Unfortunately, due to age I don't think I would be able to get enough customers. :rotfl:

:rotfl: You're too funny.

I was quite surprised when I saw all the job openings. And I don't think any of them require previous experience.

I currently taking my pre-reqs for the ADN program, but I want to work so bad that I'm thinking of going for the LPN program instead. It's a year less and there are a ton of job opportunities out there in many places. Heck, I see ads in the paper all the time for doctor offices hiring CNA's and LPN's. THAT is where I want to be. Weekends and holidays off! Plus, they always seem so happy. My gynocologist has 2 openings for a CNA and I'm praying that they still have it once I get certified. (next week if I pass!!!)

Everyone keeps telling me to go for the ADN because they make more. I'm not in it for the money though. I've been a stay at home mom for 8 years now and I'm just anxious to get out of the house for a while!

I work in private duty - one on one care with patients in their homes. This is my dream nursing job. I'd have to be dragged kicking and screaming back to ltc or med/surg. Blackcat99, I understand exactly what you mean about the prostitute thing. :chuckle

Gepends on the State you live in. You may have to work in LTC. I did 6 years in med-surg and 7 years in Dialysis but now am in La. and LTC pays more. Texas is good for LPN's and also Fla. Good luck. If you can do Med Surg. it will give you all you need to pick your job. Good luck

I am a male LPN...I have worked at a hospital in the Orthopaedic Unit which I liked very much and I also worked in the ER for some time....

I really didn't like the hospital setting too much...so I started working for VON Canada (Victorian Order of Nurses) which is community care nursing....I travel anywhere from 30-75 miles per day.....I have between 5-8 clients per day....we are known for our wound care specialty...but we do other things such as administering insulin...changing colostomies,pre-loading weekly meds for clients...checking B/P...Glucometer...Profore Dressings...compression stockings...looking after clients on ventilators....personal care.....ostomies...bowel care...which I hate...lol....but it is definately the best job I ever had...I plan my own day....I always say in comparing working in a hospital setting compared to working in a community setting..." why run when you can walk".......you will find you're niche.... good luck...

Specializes in A myriad of specialties.

I work in state group homes with developmentally disabled/mentally retarded individuals; usually 3-5 clients live in each home. Staff ratios are the best I've seen anywhere; i.e. one nurse to each home for each shift and 2-3 staff to care for those clients each shift. I worked LTC for many years(quit due to patient ratios and forever taking 9-10 hrs to get 8hrs' work done--typical of most nurses I worked with in LTC). I also worked in hemodialysis for 5 years.

I work in a correctional facility (jail nurse),Occupational nursing, School Nurse, Acute Care Rehab., and Hospice, Med/Surg.

As AN LPN I have worked several areas LTC, Family Practice, School Nurse, Occupational Nurse, Tropical Med (I spent three years on board a ship in the Caribbean) currently I work in Dermatology.

Good Luck in whatever areas you choose to work in.
