WRITER
is OpenOffice.org’s word processor: use it for anything from writing a quick letter to producing an entire book with embedded illustrations, cross-references, tables of contents, indexes, bibliographies... Auto-complete, auto-format, and real-time spelling check make light work of the hardest task. Writer is powerful enough to tackle desktop publishing tasks such as creating multi-column newsletters, brochures – the only limit is your imagination.
I used open office for long time and it's great! The only thing you have to really remember is to save your files as the correct extensions (.doc, .rtf, .txt) but even if you forget it's still compatible with everything else. There's also CALC (Excel) and Impress (Power Point)
Hope this helps
I also wanted to suggest checking with your school's computer department or bookstore. My school sells Microsoft Office to currently enrolled students for only $60. You can only install it on one computer but I thought it was well worth the $60 since it is usually $150. A lot of schools have agreements with Microsoft to sell the package to students for a lower price.

That is exactly what i was thinking when i read the OP. I haven't used it myself, but i have looked into open office and it seems pretty spiffy.
Or another option is you could get chummy with one of the computer geeks at school and he (or she) may have a umm, -ahem-, errr, a pirated copy of office

Exactly.....if you do not have Word!
(ALSO.....Only Word '97 or older should be purchased. DO NOT waste your money buying Office for Windows '95!!!!)
