Wondering if this is true or not

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I heard about the recommended 2020 by the federal government. Was looking into nursing and work at a hospital right now. They were talking about the BSN change. They however, said the state is mandating all hospitals in the state to become magnet status. Anyone know of any other states doing this?

First, clarifying your post to let the reader know who you mean by 'they' would be most helpful.

No state is mandating Magnet status- Magnet is a voluntary designation. Magnet would not WANT every hospital to be designated- because it would render it meaningless.

As far as the BSN- the nursing community has been having this debate since I became an LPN in 1977. Will it someday happen? Probably? Should you pursue a BSN now if you can. Yes, you should. Be prepared.

Which state is mandating this? Is the state going to pay to achieve the status?

I can't imagine any state legislature caring enough about Magnet status to pass a law requiring it for every hospital. Who is the "they" that is saying this? Some people/facilities will place blame for a situation on whatever happens to be convenient (take a look at everything the PPACA is getting unwarranted blame for as an example) when the truth is they were just looking for an excuse.

Additionally, the 2020 BSN recommendation didn't come from Magnet- it comes from the Institute of Medicine's [h=1]The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.[/h]

If you want to be an informed pre-nursing student, start researching the job market in your area- what do the job postings state is the required/preferred education? What do the job descriptions state? How many new grad nurses begin searching for jobs each year and how many open positions are posted for new grads to apply to?

Think of it this way: how do you suppose a government agency can require a private accreditation agency to declare that EVERY hospital in the State (pick a State) is now up to the standards of that private agency? Accreditation by Magnet is optional, and therefore can be 'demanded' for no one.

It would be like New York State passing a law that said that everything that is manufactured in New York State MUST now meet the approval of Consumer Reports Magazine, and CR Magazine MUST now declare every NYS product a high value worthy of purchase. Don't see it happening ;)

If you get your job before a law like this passing you will be fine. Magnet allows RN's just not very many per hospital.
