With all these nursing students, do you see the job market drying up?

I mean, yes, we did have a nursing shortage but don't you see it being a glut of nurses in a few years with everyone and their grandmother in nursing school? EVERY program I've heard of is impacted because of the long list of applicants.

There really is a nursing shortage.....sadly it only exists on paper. It is hospitals that are not hiring. Overtime and higher patient-to nurse ratio (depending on the unit) are seen as a fix... albeit temporary one. Also witht the loss of job peole have lost insurance and many cannot afford to even go to the hospitals. Hence a loss in may of the elective procedures that sustained budgets for years.

To make matters worse nurses really as whole do not go back to teach. Nursing school professors do not bring home to the same kind of money that their counterparts in other subjects do. The money is to be made in the hospitals . There were waiting lists before the whole economy decided to bust. The only thing is now there are many who want to become nurses....and sadly I am sure quite a few are going into it mail for the money...not all but a few. They lists are longer due to the increased applicants, smaller school budgets, and the lack of qualified nursing instructors. Sadly I think the move by the AACN that by 2014 for a BSN prepared nurse to gain a specialty degree he/she will need to get a DNP will not help the situation.

There are plenty of programs where I am where there is not a waiting list. You need good grades yeah but is is not as bad a other parts of the nation where the wait-list can be like 2-3 yrs long.

New grads don't dry up the market, money does. It's the single thing that controls whether hospitals can afford to take risk on new grads again as it does cost 150-300k per new grad training.

So cross your finger our health care system does blow up in the next decade.

There only seems to be a shortage in Med/Surg, LTAC and SNF's from my investigating. If those places didn't have such poor or ridiculous working conditions then there wouldnt be such a high turnover and difficulty filling positions. Just my opinion!!
