WILTW 2/12: The Seven Stages of Grievance (Part I)

Hi Everyone!

This week presented myself with my first grievance meeting to assist with a member. I was extremely nervous, because I know how to advocate for patients and peers without question, however, there is a right process when presenting a side to gather information from management, as well as hope to make a case to help resolve the situation; when it isn't resolved, you go to the next steps, even as far as arbitration.

The key position for me, is to remain unbiased, as well as make sure the member is succinct, on point and able to be represented based on the matter alone; one might want to go the meeting and air current and past grievances, but if it's not related to the grievance, it is best to stay on task. The other key position is if the first round doesn't go their way, you have to remain enthusiastic to continue their grievance; it would be easy to give up, but if there is a way to negotiate in the members favor, the key is to continue to do so; it also puts management on a level field with the member; and some members do not like that so much, but it may also send a message to not be as arbitrary or continue favoritism or target individuals, and that's something I'm willing to advocate about.

What have you learned this week?

I am currently 35 weeks pregnant & feel like I'm going to explode! Last week when I saw my OBGYN we discussed induction & decided since I have gestational diabetes & gallstones I will be induced on 3/9. That day can't get here soon enough!

The pain from my gallstones is worse than any pregnancy pain. At this point with the baby getting so big I am sick 99.9999999% of the time. My back will ache, my stomach will be unnaturally upset & the indigestion. Oh holy hell, the indigestion. It seems the nausea & indigestion go hand in hand. If I try to take Zofran for the nausea my indigestion flares up & then I'm in severe pain. No matter what I do I'm in massive pain due to the indigestion.

I have never wanted to do surgery so bad on myself until now. I want to cut myself open & rip out my gallbladder.

*breathes* Only 3 weeks to go.

I copied & pasted from the other thread because nothing new happened in the 5 minutes from when I posted to now. Lol.

Purely anecdotal, but when I get really bad indigestion, chewing mint gum really helps relieve the discomfort. I hope you get some relief soon!

Yay on only 3 weeks!

Boo on everything else.

I learned that I passed the NCLEX (75 questions, and I swear almost all were SATA, those bastards).

I learned that I got a job! Psych nurse, 3 days/week for 8-hour evenings ... only 20 minutes away in our states' psych hospital. Adult inpatient. I'm thrilled :woot:!

But then I learned ... my sigmoid colon is "fixed." During my colonoscopy, my colo-rectal surgeon couldn't move through it because of scar tissue adhered to the colon itself. Which is odd ... I've never had abdominal surgery, no C- sections ... so, a dx lap is now scheduled with the possibility of resection of the colon because "the sigmoid colon really should move." Awesome. But so far, no cancer :). I won't know until I wake up what the OB and colorectal surgeon decided though .

So I learned ... I don't like that kind of surprise. Wake up to a colostomy bag? No thanks!

I have tried close to everything. I wish I could drink milk or have ice cream to relieve the pain but of course since I have gallstones my gallbladder won't stand for any lactose. I love cheese so this has been extremely difficult for me.

Haha. Thank you. I know it will get better after my son is born but I don't expect it to clear up completely.

Congrats on passing the NCLEX & landing a job. Psych is so much fun & so interesting!

Sorry about the rest. I hope you get some answers. I wouldn't want to wake up to a colostomy bag but I have thought about putting a catheter in myself so I don't have to get out of bed every hour.

You are at the home stretch!!! I also heard (and used) mint as a way to settle the stomach.

you can always do clear liquids as well to rest your stomach and make sure you are getting enough hydration and small meals when that happens. (((Cheerios)))

I finally got some OTC pills for indigestion & it works great!!!! I actually slept 8 hours last night. I don't remember the last time I slept through the night! I have a sonogram & appointment with my OB today. If I get any pictures I'll post them. Last week I had a sonogram but they didn't give me any pictures.
