will universal healthcare ( in the usa) cut RN pay?

Published

I been hearing this debate off and on for a long time about how if Obama gets universal healthcare to go ( if he gets elected of course)though in the US that nursing pay will be cut dramatically. I would think this has to do with the fact that we would all be working for the government and that there will no longer be competition. There are many people in my nursing class that said they will leave nursing if thats the case. I also talked to several doctors that said the same thing about medicine in general. Im just curious if anyone has some good info about this. Thanks

Wow there seem to be a lot of bitterness in here.

Let me say for myself, I have been poor but that was decades ago. I am now and have been for quite a while very comfortable with life. Hooray for me. But I realize that isn't necessarily true for all. I know there are a lot of poor out there. I have no problem with the poor requiring social assistance. For them I see no reason not to assist them. I work in a community though where we have the highest median income and the lowest poverty rate nationwide. Or so they tell us. When you look at all the fancy house around here, I can believe it.

Do I see U.H.C. causing cuts in pay. I really don't see that happening. But if it does, it will be for the greater good of all in the nation. There are 47 million uninsured adults out there. Uninsured for whatever reasons. This is an extremely rich nation, there is no reason why we can't easily afford U.H.C. for all. That doesn't count the uninsured children. We should all help care for the poor. They need our caring.

I'd like to know how many of you really understand "Universal Healthcare". And that UH isn't a one size fits all "program". There are lots of different ways to get around this UH issue. All of the Canadian provinces use different strategies, not the same. Most anyone from Canada will tell you that their system is NOT perfect. Is it more "fair"? Perhaps. At least it is a "first come, first served" sometimes. It doesn't matter how much money you have either. Providers can't take money from private individuals or they lose out on government payment.

One of the guys in my nursing class did a research presentation on "Universal Healthcare" and some facts and myths surrounding it.

I happen to personally know a doctor who practiced in England, he did not make nearly what a doctor in the states.

Surely there are some nurses on here from Canada.

As an aside: I think if Obama is elected, we'll have lots of other problems than just our pay.

Then you retrain for a job that does pay better or is in demand. I absolutely hated and I mean hated bedside nursing but I did it everyday with a smile on my face because I had a family to support as well as needing it as a stepping ston to advanced practice. We all have to do things in life we hate or don't want to do. Many resources are provided it's up to the people to take the initiative in utilizing them.

There are always going to be poor people. And just because you have a job, doesn't mean you can afford healthcare. And just because you have the skills, doesn't mean there is going to be a job for it. And just because there are resources, doesn't mean everyone is privy to it.

Who says everyone has to be a CRNA to have a nice life. If someone is that poor their are plenty of government training programs, GED programs, college grants to provide a free college education for people in that situation. They have to be willing to take advantage of the opportunites before them. Even McDonalds pays more than minimum wage.

I didnt mean for this to get so heated.

I am signing off soon, I think I have made my point.

You can even have the last word if you like. :)

There are not 47 million unisured adults in this country the statistic widely battered about is 47 miilion uninsured "people" in this country. (see link for a breakdown of the unisured) http://www.myheritage.org/Issues/MythBusters/HealthUninsured.asp The government has a 3 trillion dollar budget. They can provide insurance to people who need it from that instead of funding hippie museums in New York state and then complaining the people that make this country work are heartless and cruel because we don't want to pay more in taxes for the uninsured.

The change he is going to give you will be after he lifts the bills from your wallet. He will raise taxes and you know what the same percentage of people in poverty will either increase or stay the same.

There are a lot of studies that indicate our system truly isn't perfect, either. I have a friend who works for a Gastroenterologist. And her fights with insurances, and HMOs and such to get a colonoscopy approved have been monumental.

As an aside:I thing if McCain is elected we will have a continued deterioration of the massive problems instituted by the illegal Bush Regime.

So many people live paycheck to paycheck and spend so much of their time working. Not everyone can go back to school. Not everyone can afford school. Not everyone has the ability to do well in school. Should they should drop their kids off in foster care while they go back to school?

I'm sticking it out through ICUs so I get into CRNA school. I dislike where I am as well. But I'm lucky. I have many familial resources available to me and the intelligence to do this. Not everyone does. I know smart people who study very hard, but just don't have the brains to be a nurse. Everyone is not born with the same level of mental capability.

YAWN. Perhaps this was the forum you were looking for http://www.dailykos.com/

By the way were gonna steal the next election as well with our Texas made electronic voting machines. Me and Karl Rove have been up all night reprogramming them.

I think you sell people short. Most people could be successful in life they don't lack brains they lack initiative. Anyone can afford school if not with grants then there are student loans. I believe anyone who is willing to put forth an effort can make it in this country if they try harder. Maybe they are working a lot maybe they need to work even more but it can be accomplished. I see it on here every day. The problem is the society has taken away self reliance and replaced it with conflict resolution and equality outcomes. Children are taught by liberals at an early age that competition is bad. You know everyone gets a trophy so no one loses. Well life ain't so generous.
