Will PCT help me get an RN job in the future?

Published

Hi, new BSN,RN here, I'm a foreign grad from the philippines currently residing here in Hawaii, i graduated last march of 2013, went back here on april of the same year till august to earn enough money to both pay for my philippine nursing licensure exam on dec 2013 which I'm so thankful about cause i passed, and at the same time with both of my CGFNS and nclex-rn exam which i just took this march 15, and passed at my first try too. I've been so eager to find a job as an RN here, but since I'm so sure enough like any foreign grad coming from my country that the experience we have there won't help us to find a job,. and so as soon as as passed my nclex, i did my BLS and ACLS training right away so i can put something in my resume,. It's been almost a month now since i passed, and I'm losing my hope and chances of getting hired, especially the market is so competitive right now, and i don't know any from here who's working inside the hospitals or any facilities who can back me up. I also heard about the new RN program, i went search online, but nothing is posted to any of the hospitals here(question: is it okay for me to personally go and ask directly from the hospital for program listings?) and since I'm so desperate of finding a job, i wouldn't even care anymore of starting as CNA/PCT just to get one. now, last week, i talked to someone from fresenius dialysis center and told me if i want to start as PCT cause they are not hiring for RN yet and if ever they do they want someone who undergone Homodialysis training, do you guys think it will help me find a job as RN later on? any suggestions i can do? appreciate it, thank you. :D

If you are already an RN, it makes no sense taking a PCT job unless that job specifies some definitive progressing to be an RN in training at some time in the near future. You would be grossly underpaid , overworked and taken advantage of your skill level and qualifications. I would keep on looking for a new grad position and expand your search area. Some new grad programs may not be posted, so try calling the hospitals to find out if they have a new grad program or when will they be hiring. If you do not mind nursing homes, that is also an option. Another option is to try a health staffing agency and work as a PRN nurse until you can get something more permanent. The staffing agency may be able to place you in a hospital or doing home health nursing.

Most healthcare employers will not hire a degree-ed individual due to training costs and expectation you will leave for RN position ASAP therefore no return on their investment.
