Hi Everyone,
I made some really bad mistakes my first two years of college and so my grades are horrible! I took the classes again and was wondering if I should just give up nursing school or will I still have a chance?? Please give me any advice you might have. I'm planning to apply to Texas Women in Houston, TX because I know this is one school that will take only the highest grade when calculating GPA. Here are my grades so far....I know they're horrible but if I could get in I am going to stay focused! BTW, I just turned 21 so I am ready to start focusing on finiishing school so please, be nice but honest!! Thanks!

okay, I am in Florida so here is my opinion on your grades. I too goofed off when I was younger, it just took my longer to get back to school than it took you! I got a C in Eng I. My school looked at the English I (which you have a B in) All of the sciences, inc. psych, nutrition, soc, and stat. I say you absolutely are good! My weighted GPA was like 3.7 overall GPA was 3.3. I got into A BSN on my first attempt. I know nothing about Texas schools, but I say you look good from where I'm sitting! Good luck!! Kelli

I'm in California and here's MY opinion :)
I also goofed off, resulting in two Cs (one in Chem and one in Stats). The rest of my grades are As and maybe a couple Bs here or there and I got my GPA raised to somewhere around a 3.7-3.8 (prerequisite), total about a 3.5. I personally didn't get in when I applied for fall 2010, and my result for spring 2010 is pending so I'll let you know...but I applied to BSN programs.
However, I do have a friend who had a 3.0 GPA and applied to ALL of the ADN programs in CA. She got rejected from all of them EXCEPT one! All it takes is one! :) So now she's well on her way to becoming an ADN RN. I'd suggest that.

It would depend on the school. I have a prior Bach in EE. My overal GPA was 2.7 when I applied to NS, but my pre-reqs were 3.7. We also had the NAT score to combine with GPA points. You could have a 4.0 and a really low NAT and not get in or a slightly lower GPA with a high NAT score and get in.
Check the admission profiles for the schools you are applying to.
Good luck!
(BTW, I am in 2nd term NS, so I made it!)

Check with the schools in your areas and have them evaluate your transcript. Looks like you did well in the preq classes so it may not be as bad. Some schools here just took those classes to arrive at GPA to get in. Good luck!

Hello - I'm a student at TWU Denton, I am waiting on a letter from both the Dallas/Houston campuses.
Try using the GPA calculation sheet on the TWU Nursing website. It can be found on this page https://www.twu.edu/nursing/forms.asp and the title is: First Degree Students Baccelaureate GPA Worksheet. When I calculated your GPA using it I got 3.184.
The Houston campus generally has a lower GPA than the Dallas campus because most of the students that go to the Denton campus get a .4 advantage (and want to stay in the Dallas area). I have heard the GPA cutoff for Dallas can range from 3.7 - 3.9
As for the Houston campus, I am not really sure. I would guess it is most likely around 3.4 - 3.7?
I messed around my first two years of school too, I had to retake A LOT of stuff. If TWU is the school that you really want to go to, I would recommend retaking a few courses, especially the one with the C.
Also, if you're in Houston, see if you can make an appointment with an advisor to talk about it!
