Will I ever get into Nursing School???

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am not the smartest kid. I am a junior as of this Fall. I only have a 2.8 cumulative GPA. A 3.3 Science GPA. and a 3.0 Pre-req GPA. I am an international student applying for nursing school in Spring 2010.

I applied to a few schools. Namely, NYU, Umass Boston, The College of New Jersey, and Nazareth College.

Do you think at least one school will accept me?

Please share with me your insights. Greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is to contact each school directly and ask if they have a minimum GPA to get into their nursing programs.

Even if you meet minimum requirements to get into a nursing program, its still competitive in regards to, who has the higher GPA in their science courses and balancing that out with who has a higher entrance exam if the program requires any such as NET, NLN, etc. So you may be able to meet minimum requirements, you should find out if they have a weight scale, where your GPA has a Point, such as a 4.0 equals 4 points, An A in Anatomy equals 3 points or B equals 2 points, then they may add up points to see who has the highest points, I've seen a school that does it that way, they even gave points for being a local resident. But dont be surprised if they dont give you their "secret" information, but its just something you can consider looking into. Long story short, see if you can find out what factors exactly are they look at and how much do they weigh in on your chances of getting into the program. I think its hard to tell if you havent Aced everything. I've had a school get 600-800 application and tell me they only accepted 60, so to make it more competitive, they raised their requirements during the selection process to eliminate most of those application. Its tough, but its doable.

10+ students to every 1 opening is a common example at many schools now days. Try some schools that are not so highly ranked or University level based. These are the hardest schools to get into and I would not even try unless I had a 3.5+ GPA all around for them anyway...

Try a 2-year school and then go get your advanced degree somewhere else later. Makes more sense, costs much less and makes better nurses actually. There are to many theory heavy R.N.s with not enough hands-on skills and in the trenchs time.

I graduated High school with a 2.8 and a baby. After years of working at burger king Bush took away the assisstance I was using for daycare so suddenly it was too expensive to work, I would bring home $200 every two weeks after taxes and daycare. So I went back to school and started on the prereqs. I used these to make my HS GPA invisable and eventually graduated Summa Cum Laude with my BSN. So don't worry jsut start working hard now and you will get to where you want to be

Congratulations Key!!! This is a success story!! I know that you and your family should be very proud!!:yeah:

there are also vocational school that will help you get you LVN and then you can move on from there. Good luck to you

Don't give up! You don't have to be the smartest kid to be successful. You WILL get into nursing school...it's just a matter of time. Keep in mind that things happen (or don't happen) for a good reason. When it's meant for you, it'll happen. Like the previous poster said, there are also vocational schools that you can go to for your LVN and work your way up from there.

I too felt the same way you did, but finally got accepted for the spring 2010. (I began taking prereqs in 2005, and finished in 2007...and still had to wait due to family situations, and not getting accepted for this fall. (I'm not the smartest kid either.) I was very depressed and discouraged, but I picked myself back up and tried again, and this time, I'm in!

Keep the faith, and don't give up...your turn will come. Good luck! :redpinkhe

do you have a source for this little tidbit? i sure see this thrown around an awful lot, and until i see something concrete to back it up, i will continue to assume it's conjecture. judgemental, hackneyed conjecture, at that.

2 year schools are so competitive, so check with the schools of your choice

Student in 2010, what school are you going to? Congrats!!

Thanks for the reply everybody! I'm just waiting for the decision letters now. I'm so nervous!

I currently have a 3.3 gpa and I am retaking AP1, and AP2 Lab. I am also taking Micro and other non science classes. Do you think I can get into a good nursing school in Texas? No community college...
