2 months after turning 18 years old I got a shoplifting misdemeanor charge. (a $14 CD-stupid I know). I initially got denied entry into the Rasmussen ADN program, but I appealed it, and they granted the appeal. But they said there were risks involved if I chose to continue. They said it is possible that I may not be able to participate in externships and may not be able to find employment. Not worried about getting a job. But will I be able to do clinicals? If not then its a waste of money. Who can I contact to find out if I will be able to do clinicals...the clinical sites or school? TIA

I would definitely contact your school and find out because each school is structured differently. And speak to the dean of your department if you have to.

At my school, they will not let you into the program with a criminal history. Look into getting your record sealed!
My school let some people in with some criminal backgrounds but ultimately it's up to the clinical site on whether they want to accept these students.

Agree with this poster. Moving forward both in school and professionally with employment is difficult with a criminal record since practically all employers will do a criminal background check and expect you to disclose anything out of the ordinary. You need to get your record expunged/sealed.

Typically clinical facilities themselves do not run background checks on student nurses, or administer TB tests, or keep records of BLS compliance. Acceptance into a nursing program includes acceptance into clinicals according to the contract between the school and the program. Your nursing program should be able to give you a straight answer.
What I really want to tell you is that getting your records expunged or sealed does not mean the Board of Nursing cannot discover them. They can and they will; this happens because they do a deeper dive (FBI Level) at the time you apply to the NCLEX and after you graduate.
Hopefully the Board will still approve your application to take the NCLEX, but I wanted you to know the reality. Best of luck to you
