Why do we have to wait until after orientation to get our books?

Why do we have to wait until after orientation to get our books? I can order the books through are school bookstore. They have a list of what we need, but we we have been instructed to wait until after oreintation. Orientation at my school is the three days before school starts. It would be nice to get a early start, but I will have to wait until after orientation.

Seems to me that this would be a question to ask of your nursing school and it's instructors.

For some of my classes, books that are "required" for the course are books that I have done without and sold back at the end of the semester without opening them. It is possible that the department of nursing makes the rules on required books and your instructors might recommend you get an older edition if the book is real expensive or the study guide isn't necessary or something like that. That being said, if you're all that anxious it might not hurt to e-mail one or two of the instructors and explain your plight. :) Good luck!

My school is the same way ...our school book store web site lists all books required or recommended for our course and we were told in our intro letter to not pick up our books until after orientation on the 14th of August...it is kinda disappointing I was really excited about getting mine and reading ahead a little!

I'll be in the same situation most likely (although I don't starting until Sep.) and although I hate to say it, I hope its not due to the fact that my school is "encouraging" us to buy the books from the bookstore, rather than ordering them for more reasonable prices on the internet in advance (e.g. half.com, Amazon).

They are supposed to post our book list in advance, but the summer session has already started for the Accelerated students and the posting isn't even up for Summer 2008, let alone Fall.

I think the previous suggestion of emailing your individual professors may be the only option. Good luck!

Honestly, I think it's to encourage students to buy from the bookstore. If you email the profs, they might be inclined to say 'wait for orientation" so that you buy it from the store. What I would do is email the level 2 students. Don't buy the BS about must having the latest edition from the bookstore. Buy them all online. It's cheaper! And if the new edition is within 2 years of the previous edition, buy the previous edition! A lot of times, the instructors haven't had time to acquaint themselves with the newest edition (what nurse would), so they tell you to buy the latest one to get the latest info, but they use the older editions in class! ha ha. Works in your advantage if you bought the older editions.

I too have been told to wait. Being so excited on getting accepted to the program, I had planned to read ahead this summer. Last week I posted something to that effect on this site and was given a lot of suggestions about summer prep. The loudest suggestion seemed to be clinical calculations or medical math. I am planning on going over my old text to brush up on all the formulas and what not so that when school begins with my shiny new books I will not have to worry about remembering the formulas for drip sets and the such.

Honestly, I cannot wait to get my books. But they are so expensive I do not want to go and get them and then have an instructor prefer something else or say that the title is not necessary. I will hold my money and try to keep in mind that patience is a vertue.

I can barely remember the last time summer seemed to be so long. I think I was 8. ha ha

op: during orientation you usually get a list of textbooks and other resources. also, your program may choose to use the summer to decide if they are going to make any changes to the program. my program does this every year while developing the new syllabi. those of us already in the program usually are not required to purchase new textbooks etc unless it is absolutely necessary to conform to a new curriculum.

besides, you will be wasting your time reading all of the beginning chapters in the textbooks offered. some content is way over your head right now and will not be understood until you have been in the program a while. it is the nature of the beast. on the other hand, after orientation it will benefit you greatly to start the early reading issued to you by your professors and to read any textbooks on test taking strategies that are recommended.

in the meantime relax and continue to be happy that you were accepted. pretty soon you will no longer be happy that you are in the program because you will be happy that you are on your way out! nursing school is brutal after first semester! gl. :twocents:

"kburns0016" I just noticed that you are in south central kentucky and have orientation on the same day that I do. Are you going to Somerset Community College?

I noticed on your public profile that you have LVN/LPN as your education, so I assume you were accepted to the bridge program? I dont know much about that program and how it works. I am starting straight into the RN this Fall.

That is so cool! I am so excited about school starting. We should keep in touch and help one another. What do you think? I noticed that you are a CNA. Do you work in Somerset? I am a LPN from years ago. I have been out of nursing for fifeteen years while I raised and homeschooled my children. I still have to take nursing 101 because I don't have any recent experience even though I do have my license current now. I know some of what to expect because of LPN school, but I know that a lot has changed. I am so ready to get back into it. Good luck and I hope to meet you in August.
