Why are RN's so fat!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was told by a nanny last night that her employer just had a baby, and she commented on how fat the RN's are at the hospital (Her employer is thin).

Her employer stated that "being RN's shouldn't they know how to control their weight"? I told the nanny that yes, but RN's have a very stressful job. They are over worked, have odd hours, and tend to eat bad food to comfort themselves because the amount of stress they are under. Usually we are understaffed and don't get breaks, and when we do leave work normally we as RN's tend to reach for junk, because high sugary foods bring up the blood sugar the quickest. I was quite offended at her comments, not because I am fat (I am not exactly slim either), but because it is a generalization of the profession. I don't know what her point was to even repeat what her employer said. However, I'm determined not to fall in that category, because I once was fat (I lost approx 61 lbs & still want to lose about 30lbs). Does that comment offend you?

I have a question. If I get a job for Dr. 90210 when I graduate will I have to get a boob job and collagen injections in my lips to get hired?? Just being sinister.:monkeydance:

I work with mainly foreign (of multiple backgrounds) thin/non-obese women. They CONSTANTLY comment on people's weight. Some of them 'like oh my gawd... how can she get that fat?!?' to really blissful comments that I know not where they come from other than they grew up without knowing that it can be embarassing to comment on a person's weight in front of them. I am a size 12, and I am the largest nurse during day shift by far. Some of my coworkers have commented on my weight in front of me. It hasn't bothered me though because I am so shocked that they do not realize that it is not appropriate to say things.. even so nonchanlantly (most women knowww when things are said to be judgemental or mean). I have lost weight and proud that I am losing more!

Anyways, I think there are alot of overweight people out there in United States society today, not just nurses. I think the weight of nurses represents what the general population weighs. That is how I have seen it.

Many of the plastics guys give serious discounts to staff.

But have you ever seen a less than pristine looking person in a derm or plastics service.

i know that obesity clinics won't hire personnel that are overweight and they give preference to staff members who wear makeup which many people don't due to religeous or allergies would seem to be discrimination to me

myself, if a patient won't listen to good advise because they don't like the looks of the nurse then they are not doing themselves a favor not showing a lot of smarts

changing metabolism is the key to losing weight...many overweight people have the same intake as a slim person...but once you gain weight your body thinks it should stay at that weight and it adjust metabolism accordingly

I am not obese, by any measure, but, I am 30 lbs heavier after having 3 kids. I don't have as much time to work out, and there is always junk food: pizza, birthday cake, cookies, etc.... laying around in the break room, and when I don't have time to sit down and eat my healthy salad with light dressing that I brought from home, I grab whatever is easiest to eat.

But, on the other hand, I do believe that obesity is a hugh problem in this country. How many people are opting for gastric bypass vs good old fashioned diet and exercise. My best friend just had this surgery because she didn't want to "waste time" trying to lose weight, she wanted a quick fix (to an emotional, as well as physical problem). How many times have we taken report on a 400lb pt and thought, great, my back will be killing me later. How many pts have I seen come in to the ER in resp distress because they are in heart failure because of their poor choice in diet? A lot of these people don't have insurance, so, we end up paying for their hospital bills, CPAP machines, trach surgeries, etc....My father-in-law refuses to exercise or eat right, instead, he just administers more insulin to cover the pepsi or cake he is ingesting. Thats the mentality of americans. We go for the easy way out. It's not just nurses, it's everybody.

I would have simply said that "RNs are human, too."

And yes, I would have been offended. What a silly generalization.

.... the "Super Nanny" isn't exactly svelte....

OK, I'll shut up.

Actually, I think she's gorgeous, overweight or not.

Shift work, lack of sleep, poor diet, Too much TV and other modern enternainment conveniences, lack of cardivascular and aerobic exercise...

The same reason most of the people in western society are overweight.

Bingo!

I would work for a plastic surgeon if I could get a really nice discount on a tummy tuck (I am so vain). Honestly, I've worked so hard in the gym that I'm almost convinced I'm going to need a little help from the surgeon & his little knife to get the job done. :(

People who work in the healthcare profession are expected to care for their bodies. This includes eating well. It would seem hypocritical to be encouraging a patient to lose weight to benefit their health if you yourself are overweight due to a poor diet.

It is because they are lazy and that does not hold true for RN's but all people. Everyone is quick to come up with an excuse: i work odd hours, long hours, don't get a break, have kids, need junk food, like junk food, i am trying, i don't like the gym, well i am not fat but not skinny either, i don't have time etc.... Unless you have a problem with your thyroid you can blame noone but your self.
Obesity doesn't come from laziness, but from physical inactivity combined with poor eating habits.
