Why red seal broken with coude cath?

Published

Nurses out there,

Do you guys know why there isn’t an intact red seal on coude catheters?

Do you mean to where it attaches to the tubing?

Foley Cath kits with the drainage system have the red seal. Coudes are separate, so when needed, the seal is broken and the tubing/drainage system is attached to the coude.

Aren't coude catheters simply the insertion catheter, and the urine collection container (leg bag/drainage bag) is put on after insertion. I don't think I've seen them come pre-attached before. So, there never was/is a sterile seal between the catheter and the drainage bag.

Yep, I have never seen coude caths as part of a kit. It would be smart to make them, you know, for that whole closed system/infection prevention thing. But usually you have to take a separate gravity drainage bag (usually from a regular kit) and attach it to the coude.

I was just coming here to say that we do indeed have coude kits in my facility. Of course, both our regular foley kits and coude kits only come in one size, so if we need a cath that is larger or smaller, then there won't be a red seal on those either- they're a separate supply.

Well it's about time! Lol. I have always worked ER/trauma, so for all I know our inpatient units had them. Thanks for the info!
