I'm just curious as to why some of you chose the path you did.

Because they are two different career fields.

I understand this topic has been talked about a lot, and I have looked at a lot of articles concerning this topic. I just wanted fresh answers.

I think most nurses like to stay nurses because of their exposure to doctors, which is often unpleasant. For any nurse who has worked in a teaching institution, and witnessed what medical school training is like, what mentally happens to interns and residents you become friends with, the thought of so much debt, it just does not look appealing.

I think ego is a huge part of being a doctor. Nurses have spent most of their careers being humbled by their patients on a daily basis. Sometimes that is the best part of being a nurse.

I have several friends who are nurses who went to medical school and are now practicing physicians. You can spot them in a crowd--as they don't act like other doctors. They just have a different air about them.

Medical school is not a bad thing. The time comittment, debt, pressure, not as appealing as advancing your nursing career!

Timing. I wanted to go to med school, but I had to make choices that were best for everyone in the family and for my career. I still wish I'd gone MD, but life isn't always all about what I want.

I ended up back in school in my 30s and just didn't think the time commitment was worth the expense so I went to nursing school then FNP school. I'm happy where I'm at now that I see the demands on MDs despite the higher pay they receive.

Im not an NP but have hopes to become one, and I have also debated med school, but I have decided that I will chose NP school b/c of the time and money constraints. Im a mom to 4 children and besides the fact that my husband would never agree to med school, I want to be around for my kids. if I was freshly 22 with no children, I might go for it, but might not b/c med school scares me!

Thanks for all the responses, guys!
