Why I stick to online classes....

Published

So this is more of a vent then anything else. And I promise I am not trying to open the religion can of worms.

I am taking an online, non-lab biology class through my school. Since we can not do dicussions in class, we have an online forum that we are required to post on. This weeks topic is genetics. One of the articles was about using technology to eventually be able to find defective genes that mutate and cause dieseases and cancer, and being able to fix them or get rid of them. I post this long dicussion about how I would use the screening, because my SO is a type 1 diabetic, and it also runs in my family. So then someone posts that diabetes isn't that big of a deal. WOAH. So, trying to clarify my point, I describe how he has gone blind, had to have part of the muscle in his leg removed becuase that is the only place he could give himself his shots, the constant, almost daily highs and lows, how he goes so low that he should have been in a diabetic coma and died. There is a lot more, but I don't feel like getting into it all. (he has really poor control of it, and almost always has).

This girl responds with, well God makes people how he wants them, so he wants your SO to have to deal with this, and he must want him to die.

WHAT????? Are you kidding me?? I told him that she was lucky it was an online class or I may have ended up spending my birthday in jail!

What a thing to say to someone she doesn't even know!

Some people just don't get it. Has nothing to do with religion.

 Just hang in there, nursing needs folks like you.

Munchkin The girl is an idiot. I wouldn't even let her bother you. How ignorant to think Diabetes is no big deal, it affects every part of your body. Just feel bad for her that she has to go through life brainless:banghead:

Yea, this girl is obviously an idiot! Hang in there!

Well that girl sounds like an idiot and it's a shame she has picked a profession like nursing....she has a horrible outlook on life.

Big hugs to you and especially your son.....I'd say if God had anything to do with it he chose you as your son's mother for your love, care, and support that seems so obvious.

And like you said she's lucky it's an online class b/c I'd say if she'd said that to you in person you would not have been the only person to want to put her in her place :)

Ugh, I have to agree, that has nothing to do with religion - it's just plain stupidity. Not that it's any comfort now, but someday she will most likely realize what a horrid and insensitive thing she said. Or maybe she won't - some people just never wrap their minds around what other people go through.

I'll never forget when I was pregnant and reading a message board full of other pregnant moms. A lady posted she just found out her unborn baby had down syndrome and was looking for support. Someone replied, "The power of prayer works. Just pray and your baby will be born without down syndrome".

That still bothers me to this day. I believe in the power a prayer to a certain extent, but come on!

I can only hope that this girl IS NOT going to school for nursing. Medical care does not need nurses with an attitude like hers. I would be highly pi$$ed if someone made a comment like that to me.

There are a lot of ignorant morons in the world. Half the people are below average. I can't believe that comment, and I see some pretty stupid ones in my online class as well.

Diabetes runs in my family. I don't have it, and my children do not have it so I was really grateful about that. What I have seen is that for some diabetes is hard to manage, disables ones life, and causes all sorts of medical problems, and often times the patient comes close to coma or death multiple times. In others its more of a hassle, and its managed well, few if any close calls, and few medical problems that are diabetes related. These people mainly dislike the injections, keeping up with blood sugar, and the diet restrictions. Then of course there are those who are middle of the road, and somewhere in between. I have known 2 people who have had to have a foot cut off due to diabetes, and another who went blind, and I promise they would NOT say it was no big deal. Apparently this girl online wasn't too informed about diabetes. I hope she doesn't go into nursing.

I can just imagine her going into a terminal patients room telling them their cancer was no big deal, and it was all gods plan for them to suffer, and die a horrible death. I can imagine all the urinals she will get thrown in her face.

The instructor should have posted a message to that student, telling her her comments were not appropriate. Or better yet, the instructor could have deleted the comment for being hurtful to another student...

Don't get me wrong - I'm not wishing anything horrible on this girl, but it would be interesting to see her reaction if SHE were the patient and some stupid so-and-so came into HER room and made a crack like that, wouldn't it?

Unfortunately it seems that people like her never seem to really get a taste of their own medicine - although I have heard stories to the contrary...

What a moron. To the OP - SHE'S the only thing that's not a "big deal"; anyone that stupid can't be of much significance.
