I have a question for all you male nurses out there - and this is just out of pure curiousity. My coworkers and I (mostly women, I admit) were discussing this - WHY do male nurses wear fanny packs?
There are probably some fanny-pack-totin' female nurses out there, but we have mainly noticed the guys.
Better yet, WHAT IS IN THEM? lol :)
It's a mystery to us gals.
I for one, would not wear a questionably un-macho fanny pack. I wear a Home Depot carpenter's apron. Actually, I have nothing personal against most fannypacks. They are just too small for my purposes. With my basic load of nurse gear stuffed into the apron pockets, I am self-contained and ready to roll when called to a situation in any corner of my facility.
Actually overtime, I've customized the bag to suit me. I hang my scissors through the tape rolls on my hemostat attached to the center of the bag. My scissors are further secured by a badge reel similar to the dummycords known to some of us who wore funny green suits in other lifetimes. In one pocket of the apron, I stuff my stethoscope. Report sheets, staffing papers, CPR mask, alcohol pads and anything I think I'll need goes in the other pocket. I for one, prefer to have what I need when walk into a situation.
I do get some funny looks and comments about "Bob the Builder and toolman". But generally, the feedback has been positive. It definitely gets noticed by contractors who come to the facility!
I've worked with several female nurses who use the "fanny" packs. I've been using them, too - under military uniform.
What's in them? -
-IV catheters/heplocks(18 ga)
-tape
-alcohol preps
-tourniquet
-drug guide (Scut Monkey)
-hemostats
-measuring tape
-sharpie
-highlighter
I think women nurses might think having them makes them masculine looking? Just a thought.

I just finished ordering the Nurse Pro Pack...
BTW, notice the female ID attached.
That is neat. I checked out their website.
I have a similar smaller version, it came with my mini-Maglite.
It could hold tongue blades, the flashlight (of course), pen/sharpie,
a syringe or two....interesting idea!
I just don't want to look like "New Nurse Guy" (New Supreme Commander), with my spiffy white uniform and new "tool belt" (a-la batman, Nurseman perhaps?) "The Joker is no match for my Etomidate nurse darts!!"

Yes it does in North America. But as noted above in Britain and Austrailia it's another part of the anatomy. :)
