WHY do employers that give 2-3 days orientation require a month's notice of resignati

My current employer gave me 2 days of haphazard orientation (even as a new grad) and somehow still has the nerve to require a full month's notice in order to leave on good terms. Is this normal?? It's a part time position with low pay and no benefits.

At will employment is at will. They can fire you for any reason. As long as its not for something federally protected. Race religion gender disability etc. There is no law stating that you have to give any notice at all. Every hospital has a policy stating you must give a notice. But it's not legal and will never stand up in court. They will use it as an excuse not to pay out for your PTO earned. Again not legal. That is a part of your benefit package. They may only pay back a portion. But by federal law you are entitled to a pay out for vacation time. Not sick time but vacation time. It gets tricky when they blend sick time with vacation time. Just another way for them to screw us over. But screw them. Do you think they will give you a two weeks notice before firing you? Nope so why do you owe them a two weeks notice? At will is at will know the laws know your rights.

Again, just because it's "legal" to quit without notice, that doesn't mean it's a smart idea. The employee has a lot more to lose than the employer. Do you really expect people to get an attorney and go to court to get their accrued PTO paid to them when the employer balks at doing so? Is it worth it to have this employer give you a bad reference for the rest of your career? It's easy to say "screw them" -- but you're screwing yourself at the same time.

I have marked on my application that the prospective employer may not contact a previous employer.

I have been hired even when I have responded in such a manner.

Give them the notice they want if it matters to you what they think of you. For most of us, it does matter as health care is a small world and one ticked off ex-employer can really rain on your parade of jobs.

Having said that, I have had employers on my resume who would not re-hire me (not that I would have ANY desire to work for or with them EVER again). I am honest with prospective employers about what happened (at least from my perspective). I have gotten jobs anyway, good jobs. In the cases of those no rehire employers, I have professional references from folks who worked directly with me in those jobs, for instance a letter of recommendation from the Medical Director of the hospice, or a Physical Therapist or PharmD or similar.

@elkpark. Yes! I would hire an attorney if they dont pay out my PTO. If I was a patient at the hospital I work at. And I didnt pay my bill they would garnish my wages. Same concept. If they owe it to you. And they are required by law to give it to me. Damn right i will hire an attorney. And just to give you some background on me. I worked for an employer that automatically blocked everyone from re hire for at least 1 yr. So even if you gave the 30 days notice. They still will block you from rehire and tell perspective employers that you are not eligible for re hire. So yea. Do you think I gave and worked a 30 days notice??? Hahaha nope. And no one else did either. I have had several other jobs since them and no one has ever mentioned it. So no I did not screw myself over. Sometimes a job just isnt a good fit. Sometimes life happens like get married or husband gets job in another state. We are not slaves. We are not owned by our employers and we should really get over the notion that we owe it to the employer to give notice. Like I said. Do they give you a 2 weeks notice before they fire you? Hahaha yea right. Good luck with that!

Ineligible for rehire cannot be pulled for giving the standard 2 weeks notice. In fact, the question is hardly in use because of the legal issues it raises.

This sub par facility should NOT be able to make her work past two weeks notice... period.

We are professionals and working under this veiled threat makes us look like children, afraid of a spanking.

I was on an involuntary suspension for over a year and then terminated for something unrelated to my job. Trust me when I say it is extremely hard to find employment. My previous employer won't give prospective employers any information about me and that translates into no job offers. It doesn't matter how well I interview or how well a future employer may like me. No response or a bad reference, even though not deserved, is hard to recover from.

Unfortunately, most of us are owned by the corporations as we have to earn money to live. We are children afraid of a spanking.
