Why become a CRNA (other than compensation). What are the other perks a details that draw people to this profession?

Specializes in Operating Room.

I want to go on in my education for a CRNA. The money is nice, but mostly I want to see really cool surgeries. From what I've read and heard from speaking to CRNA's is 1) you can work as many hours as you want 2) you can pretty much name where you want to work and 3) you see some really interesting s***.

Specializes in ICU, currently in Anesthesia School.

Sapper- now that the peanut gallery has sounded off-

I chose to go back to become a CRNA for the autonomy/responsibility, academic challenge, and ability to practice utilizing my mind more than my body.

Not to mention that anesthesia is AWESOME!( Now-ask me again in about a year after a 16 hour call shift and I may have some other words about anesthesia;))

Specializes in ER/ICU, CCRN, SRNA (class of 2010).

I find great satisfaction in placing IVs, titrating drips, and monitoring pts very closely....These are some of the skills of a CRNA...Also, I have an excellent academic record with science and math being my best subjects...Again, important aspects to a CRNAs education.

So putting it all together, it just fits me...From personality to academic ability...It is where I want to be.

As far as the previous posters r/t "$$$$"...Although CRNAs are one of the highest paid APNs (Advance Practice Nurse), I believe they like all nurses are UNDER paid...IMHO-APNs should make 75-80% of an MDs salary in their respective fields...Do they usually????

I hope that helps answer your question

Anesthesia has everything that I like about the ICU and then some....and nothing that I don't.

As far as the peanut gallery sounding off, I wouldn't worry about them. We pay no attention to under-educated and disgruntled flight nurses and pre-nursing students. That's just a waste of our time.

I agree! Stay out of the forum if you are unable to contribute something of value, after all isn't this a forum for CRNA's?

under-educated and disgruntled flight nurses

Easy there buddy. I happen to be a (former) Masters prepared flight nurse/paramedic, and current SRNA. And, in a critical situation with a crashing patient in the OR, I'll take an experienced flight nurse over the vast majority of ICU nurses and CRNAs that I've been around.

I can understand how some of the people feel. I will retract my statements. I agree this is a CRNA specific forum and the statement in question did not add anything productive to the thread.
