Who got their happy letters from WCCCD?

I got my acceptance letter for the Spring 08 program at WCCCD! Yea me!!!:balloons::yeah: Who else got theirs?

Jillian,

I forgot to tell you congrats on passing. I'm not tooting my own horn, but merely offering assistance that I wish someone would have offered me when I was accepted. I think you took what I said as being elitist, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Don't fall into the "us against them" trap. We are all "Westerners" or "NW" at some point, but we are all WCCC students. Don't judge the student by what campus they go to. Like I said before (may have been in a different post), you never know why someone fails and you shouldn't make judgements about them because of that. We need to be helping to pull each other up instead of putting each other down.

I am not putting anyone down.

I don't know if you have been to the NW campus lately, but there are pictures everywhere of wha the new campus is going to look like. Why would they pour money into that building, when they are building a new one? Also, the tuition we pay, barely pays the bills for the school. WCCCD relies on money from the state to make improvements. The expansions at Western, and the new NW campus are because of the millage. Nothing to do with how much we pay.

I took my first 7.5 weeks at NW, and I just finished my second 7.5 at Western campus, and I do agree that it is nicer! But that is not the point I am trying to make. Enough people say bad things about our school. I don't think that we should make ourselves look any worse or add to the bad reputation that WCCCD has. Obviously, they are aware that the campus has problems, which is why they are investing in a new building. We are lucky that the NW campus is there, or half of us wouldn't even be in the program.

To add to that, I just took my final for Med/surg I theory, and passed with flying colors, along with my 4 NW buddies that are in the class with me, while quite a few of the "Westerners" who failed....so the quality of the campus is not what matters in Nursing School.

I'm sorry I just got offended, because Lotus made it sound like the Western campus folks were so much better.

I have been attending WCCCD for 3 complete years now in a row, and I completed a year of school there back in 1988. So, this is the beginning of my 4th year.

I just completed the whole entire semester at N.W. campus and it really is in bad shape. I am not going to harp on the subject anymore, because it's not worth it, I am grateful to be in the nursing program and have the opportunity to become an R.N. soon. The building sucks, however....

we are all in this together, it doesn't matter if you go to Eastern, Western or N.W., we are all nursing students, and there is no one better than the next. This schooling is very intense and challenging at times, so we do need to support each other, because we are so to speak...our own breed.

As for Wayne County Nurses...well I know quite a few that graduated from our school years ago, and all have great jobs...I just completed my OB clinical at Hutzel/Harper Hospital and most of the nurses I talked to were WCCCD grads...I heard they practically run the DMC, so don't let anything negative you hear on the outside affect you. We are getting a serious education and we will soon be out there on our own..

So, happy holidays, enjoy your break and keep studying hard....good luck on your next semester..

Psych was my worst rotation yet. Some people love it and others hate it. It's so very depressing, to know that these people are trapped in their own minds and because it's cheaper to medicate them rather than counseling, all you see is a bunch of doped up clients suffering from the affects of their meds and all of the horror stories they have. But because its so much paperwork and reading, I say take it first. I did my psych rotation at Heritage. Just so you know, you wear casual dress clothes, no jeans, tennis shoes. Many of the clients are HOMICIDAL. Don't ever have a false sense of security on the unit. There was one guy at Heritage who was released and later murdered someone (a friend of mine had this guy as a patient). Another guy at Circle of Life killed his roomate, A patient at Walter Reuther choked to death in the lunchroom. This all happened while students were in clinical. Oh yeah, be prepared for the patients male and female to make sexual advances to you.

I did my MS3 clinical at Henry Ford Main. Loved it. Had Mr. Gmerek, he's awesome. Ms. Thomas is also there, she's great too. MS is the easy part. I didn't hear too many good things about Henderson.

I could go on and on. You guys are already ahead of the curve. I can tell you really support each other.

Steph

Thanks for the advice Steph!!

I am starting Psych first if all goes well in the lottery...and I was thinking of Heritage..guess I am in for a big surprise, I thought most of the patients there, were drying out from substance abuse...guess again right?? Now, I am scared...:uhoh21:

I want to take Dr. Cook, because I had her for Med Math and absolutely loved her, I like the way she talks..and can still hear her voice, whenever I take a math test before clinicals..lol

do we need a new book for Psychiatric nursing?? or do we use Iggy?

I don't like Iggy either...wording could be much simpler in my humble opinion...thanks for the heads up on everything too, and congratz to you, you are almost finished....YAY :balloons:

Happy Holidays, enjoy your break

That millage is coming out of our taxes we pay, we voted for that millage.

I also heard that the building at N.W. is one of the reasons our school cannot belong to the NLN, that came from staff in the nursing office itself...so, I guess the future students will enjoy the old U of D school for their nursing program, however, I heard they were expanding the nursing department at Western too...you hear all kinds of stuff, I tell ya...

"another nursing student had her tires stolen right in the parking lot" That is CRAZY!!!! I see NW is trying to move to another building. Hopefully that will be a nicer location. Hey, have you guys seen the new bookstore at the Western Campus?!?! It is beautiful!!! I can't wait till the renovations are over. I am trying for the Western Campus since I only live like 5 miles from there. I have to admit, I am partial to the Western campus, that is where I got my start with nursing school. It is like home for me.

Andrea, Physh first? See ya on Monday!?!

Yes D, Psych first, how about u? give me a call when you can..

I haven't seen the new bookstore, I should check it out..haven't been there since semester one...been in Detroit for all of 2nd semester.

"do we need a new book for Psychiatric nursing?? or do we use Iggy?

Yep. The psych text is Foundations of Mental Health Nursing a clinical approach by Varcarolis, it's the 5th edition.

You can go to the WCCCD homepage and click on Bookstore and it will let you know which books are being used as well as the price.

Just an FYI, if you guys don't already know, you can go to the Nursing office after lottery and get the syllabus for Psych and MS3.

Unfortunately, we do have to use Iggy. I personally don't like it, so I bought the Brunner's 10th edition (very cheap) it has a LOT more info and really breaks things down. Ms. Thomas tests from Iggy.

Thanks a million. I like Ms. Thomas as well, we had her for MS/II this past semester, she was covering for Beaudry. I did well in her class, and I had Dr. Cook for Med Math and got an A in her class. I like them both. I didn't know about the bookstore link, so thanks a lot, much obliged..

The building that's being renovated in Detroit for the new campus is the campus that housed the former Mercy College of Detroit, which moved to the UofD campus and as you know, merged with them some years back. Mercy College had an excellent BSN program. It's on W. Outer Drive at the Southfield Freeway, between 6 and 7 Mile Rds.

That was a bad area when it was Mercy College. Yikes.

(Mercy College was also know for their good police officer training program. The nurses were there in the day, and the cops were there at night.)

I thought that was near Rosedale Park, one of the better neighborhoods in Detroit.
