student a calls student b a name....
student b kicks a's books on the floor...
b punches a in the eye, giving a a black, swollen eye.
teacher sends referral to the office for both students, based on the discipline side of the fight.
teacher brings a to me for an ice pack, and takes him back to the office, then to class.
here's my question:
is it my job to call mom and say "a got into a fight, he has a black eye, etc"
or
should that be left up to administration when they call to inform mom of whatever punishment is going to be handed out for the fight?
my only reservation is:: if i call mom to tell her about the black eye and administration hasn't called mom yet, am i overstepping my bounds by telling her about a disciplinary matter?? am i overthinking this?

I call parents strictly from a medical standpoint.
Nurse: Maam, your son was in an altercation this morning, he sustained an injury to his left eye. I have checked his vision, clear, pupils reactive to light. he does have some swelling and discoloration around the eye for which I have applied ice. I suggest you keep an eye on it.
Mom: Who did it? is the kids punished what is the school doing about it?
Nurse: maam, I can only speak to you about the medical needs which were addressed, if you like I can transfer you to the vice prinicpal (or security officer, principal) to speak about the disciplinary issue.
Thats all I say.

I'll typically leave it up to administration unless it's something that needs follow up - as i would for any similar injury regardless of how it was gotten or unless administration cannot make their call before the student gets home. My admins are pretty good about telling me that they called. Sometimes I will call them or a secretary to check before the end of the day if i havent' heard from them.
but i'm with donnacee - strictly medical, factual. no other student name mentioned - no discipline mentioned. If they want to know they can call administration.
I spoke with the principal and he told me to go ahead and call since he had been in meetings all morning and hadn't had a chance to address the issue. About a minute later, he told me to wait and he would check into it and call Mom. He said he would rather be the one to deal with it first, rather than Mom find out about the fight from me. He said if she had further questions about his injury, he would forward the call to me.

I normally call and keep it medical. I let them now what is going on with their child and I do tell them how it happened but that I can only tell them that the administration is working on it and that I don't have any further details. The prinicipal then will call the parents back, once he/she has spoken with all parties involved :)

I call right away if I deem it medically necessary. If not, parent may not get any call and that is way worse. I keep it strictly medical and refer back to administration if they need more info.
It is one of those topics I am highly touchy about. Too many times have I got absolutely cussed out because I do not know more specifics. I put it right back on the person who sent student to me because most of the time the kid comes in with no note, no info from teacher.
First think I say is. "Your kid is in my office because he said that..........................I have no further details about what actually happened as my only concern was to make sure your child was provided proper first aid care." If you have further concerns, please contact ...............at...................

I call & state that I am the nurse & I keep it medical w/ my assessment/ recommendations/ needed follow-up. If they start asking me about discipline for their or the other child, I state that I am the nurse & that will be carried out by the principal later. I was simply calling to inform her of her child's visit to the school health clinic. I have *never* had a parent upset about that. They are usually grateful for the call & thank me.
