I work on a busy surgical unit and right now RNs are drawing the daily blood work at about 6:00am every day.
I know that in some hospitals the phlebotomy dept goes to each unit to do it but the RNs would do stat tests during the day.
So, who does the daily blood work at your work place?
Thanks.

At the hospital where I work at routine blood draws are done by the Lab/Phlebotomist (even stats). The only time RN's do blood draws is if its from a central line.

here the phlebot folks are avaliable all day long, the work is scheduled into two hour blocks so when a draw is ordered, it goes on the 6am draw, or the 8am, 10 am etc. the 6am draw happens sometime between 6-8am. As nurses we are expected to draw the blood on pts with central lines, and we frequently do regular draws when we need something done at a specific time, or stat.

I second that. We dont draw anything, not even stat Blood Sugars. The only time we have to deal with any type of blood draws is if it comes through a central line.

Lab draws everything on the general units and ICUs except central lines, PICs etc even then they bring the right tube up to us. In ES lab is only available from 6PM till midnight or so,the RNs do all the other draws.

Same here, lab techs draw all blood except central lines. We are NOT allowed to do blood draws at all. You would think it would be a good idea for stats, but?????
Thanks for your replies everyone. I'm checking this because we are so busy that I thought it would be a good idea to give this work back to the lab or phlebo. I just need some back-up.
Thanks again to everyone who's answering.

We get admission blood work when we start IV's. After that, unless its a dire emergency (like a type and cross as the pt is going to the OR), our phlebotomists do it. 24/7.
