Which NP specialties make the most money?

Published

Besides nurse anesthetists, which specialties in NP make the most money? I was reading on Practical Nursing Salary | Averages, Ranges, and Starting FNP's in private practice can make up to $150,000 in my area. I was wondering if this is true. Which specialty makes the most $ - geriatrics, psych, FNP, etc....

I thought psych NPs made the most. Although I do have a friend making over 150k as a FNP

Wouldn't it vary state by state?

True. I was told that overall Psych NP is well compensated throughout the US and I know that is the case here in NY. My friend that is a FNP happens to work in NY also so that may explain the increased salary and the fact that her workday consists of seeing patients from 8am to 6pm almost non-stop.

I think it does vary state to state. I make 80k with my new job but I live in a state that has a very low cost of living. You can easily find a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath home for around 120k or less if you're willing to do some work.

I think it does depend on where you live. I live in the midwest and the specialty practices (regardless of the NP certification).

So, at least in my area, its not necessarily the APRN certification but the practice setting as to income potential.

I'd agree it varies by state, specialty and definitely setting. I work off hours in a hospital and make a premium. That said please don't pursue a specialty simply based on the money. Although I am totally about making the most money I can imo having an affinity and talent for a specialty is important.

Wrong. Like any specialties. Salary varies states by states. Salary around here in southeast 90k :( Refusing to accept low salary and now working contract with zero benefit now. I want to move so bad but I do not want to abandon love ones.

In-patient usually makes more on average from what I've read, although out-patients with productivity bonuses can make a ton of money too. My specialty (neonatology) actually has one of the higher average salaries and I suspect it's because it's an in-patient role in an intensive care unit where we also do invasive procedures. I'm making just over six figures as a new graduate NNP in the southwest.

I am am a first yr new grad, been working 8 months. I was offered 79k base and I asked for 90k and got it. Also I do 4-6 ER calls a month at $75/hr. I'm also in charge of nuclear med stress tests. I picked up extra responsibilities after getting certified with ATLS and asthma education 2 months after I started working. Since then I have been making 12-13k a month, which makes it over 150k. And this is just the beginning. I have a friend who is cardiology NP first surgery assist with 7 yrs experience and she makes close to 200k. Our profession has a limit but it can be pushed if you want to learn and work hard, you'll earn more respect & money! Keep studying! I am starting post graduate psych certification program this coming Fall & can't wait to be able to do more with that. If I'm being paid more then that's just a bonus :)

Also all providers get 4 wks vacation, $2500 CME, and starting 2nd year there's incentive bonus. The bonus part wasn't on my contract in the beginning but I took my friend's advice and negotiated it in there. So take your time and look around, do not accept anything and show your employer what you're made off!

You are making $75 an hour for the 24 hour call time frame? Does this require you to be onsite? I don't ever have to go in when taking straight call but only make $25 an hour for the overnight call portion with my regular wages for day shift rounding. I don't think many of us take call so its good to hear what others make. Thanks in advance!
