Which Chemistry class......

Published

I am taking chemistry in the Spring and have 2 options. I can take the 4 o'clock class with a new teacher that has no reviews, or the 5:30 class with a teacher that has only one review and it's favorable. The only reason I'd take the 4 o'clock is the earlier time. I work full time and have 2 kids. Granted both the classes are 2 days a week for 3 hours each night, but I've heard Chemistry is one of the harder pre-req classes and has a lot of Math. A friend of mine said the advantage of the 4 o'clock is that sometimes new teachers are better because they want good reviews. Which class would you guys take? Thanks for reading:)

How would a new teacher be better just because they want good reviews? Do mean they will be soft, have no rules and spoonfeed you the answers so people like her? You learn nothing from that. People usually whine and call them "bad" teachers if they have expectations and make you actually learn something. You are going to have to make a lot of critical decisions as a nurse. I think choosing between a 4:00 class and a 5:30 class should be something you could handle yourself.

I consider a "good" teacher to be someone who can convey the material well, is open to questions, offers their own office hours, and is able to keep control of the class (does not allow unnecessary talking or cell phone use). This is how my A & P teacher is and she has the utmost respect from myself and my classmates. If the teacher who was reviewed just has an "easy" rating, then I would go with the new teacher.

Thank you:) I agree 100%. I'm not wanting an easy A. I'm hoping to pick the right professor so I can actually learn and understand the material because I know they are all building blocks for the program.

can you make an appt and "interview" ea prof? and make sure that these are full fledged freshman chem., and not "just for nurses".

It's fundamentals of chemistry so it's not just for nurses, but I did think about trying to meet with each of them. Sometimes I think I might be a bit OCD on trying to pick the right professor. lol

is that the chemistry other science students would talk? or is it below that? The "fundamentals" label has me concerned. I, obviously, don't think meeting with the profs is a bad idea, lol.

It's the lowest level of chemistry, chem 101. I have my algebra class tonight so I'm going to see if anyone else has taken either of the professors courses. Wish me luck! lol

In my experience, new instructors have unrealistic expectations. They are so used to how post-bachelorette level classes operate and expect you to work at or close to that level. I would take the experienced teacher who has figured out how to teach newbies.

Good luck...

Thank you! It's nice being able to come here and hear other people's opinions, even if it is just about picking a class, from people who have been in school for longer than me. I'm just starting my first semester and have been out of school for 14 years and things definitely change! Thanks again!
